I use runningintheusa.com. Click Races, then click your state. you can filter by month or by type/distance of the race if you want. It will give you links to the races, as well as a button to register (if registration is open for a given race). Very handy website!

Outside of the internet, keep an eyes open and read flyers around town. I found out about a transplant 5k by reading the wall while waiting for my tea.

The google machine is great for finding races. If you patronize a running store in your area, they will definitely have information and may in fact organize races themselves.

Yes, our city really publicizes a few, but this year we have the COlor Run too, and I can't wait! Your city might have an events page that covers some of them too!

I google it (5K in x city). Most cities have a running/walking club and all the races in the area will be on their page. Also sometimes if you are a member of the club you can get a discount on race registrations or training runs for the half and full marathons. I just did a Color Run a few weeks ago and it was awesome. My area is also having their first ever Glow Run (so EXCITED) in August.

How do I find a local 5K, 10K, half or full marathon in my area? I'd like to start having such goals.
