No, I don't do it intensely enough, and stop, do something else, go back, etc. it's good for muscle tone, but experts say, really, not to count it, enjoy any extra calories used up though. I think shoveling snow for awhile should count, but I never counted it.

I don't count housework as exercise; no matter how hard I scrub, I can't get my heart rate into the high-intensity zone for a sustained amount of time. I only count *deliberate* exercise as exercise.

I just count my steps. I'm up and down stairs a lot while I clean. I clean one room, carry vacuum to next room, get bucket to mop floors, rags to wipe down countertops, doing laundry all the same time. I put on lots of steps so I count that as my exercise.

Yes, I count it - I do squats, side lunges, dance, all while cleaning. Some days I do very heavy housework - IT COUNTS!

Try this:
Check your pulse prior to sweeping, mopping etc.
Check your pulse, during and after.
Did you reach your aerobic HR goal? (220-age=goal)
If you did, count it as exercise. If not, it's just activity, good for you but not exercise.

Same thing goes for walking the parking lot, shopping the mall or Wal-Mart etc.

I did count moving 500 50# boxes of tiles 100 feet as weight lifting! And I was sore enough the next day to prove it!

I definitely count house work as exercise.

Because of my size, cleaning my house can be an intense aerobic workout. If it's just light work such as Swiffering the living room, washing dishes, making the bed or doing the laundry, no I don't count it. By when I'm doing a deep cleaning on several rooms of the house, you bet your butt I do!

Yes. I have a husband and 3 children ages 5 and under. We also live in a 2 story town home, so keeping up with things is crazy and time consuming.

There should be a tracker to judge by. Am I missing where that might be in this website?

I never consider housework or gardening as a workout. I consider it bonus movement, but I feel that even if I gardened for 2 hours, but didn't walk or use the elliptical or some form of cardio or strength training that day, I didn't work out.

yes, housework is exercise, just not cardio. when your body is moving your burning calories. of course your not burning as many when your not moving as fast or hard. so, I say..

MLAN613 Posts: 16,119

Basically, no. Basic housework does not get my heart rate into the cardio zone really long enough to count. As others have mentioned, if it's heavy duty activity like moving furniture, I might consider it.

Definitely not- it doesn't get my heart rate up and isn't significantly working any muscles. Any calories burned are a bonus, but I don't consider housework exercise.

some of it I can count, like mopping my floor since I do that on hands and knees so it is upper and core. But most of it no.

All activity besides lying on the couch is exercise, but its intensity varies with different people.

I only count housework when it's especially vigorous and really gets my heart pumping and muscles working. So I guess that would be classified as "heavy housework."

I agree that only heavy housework counts as exercise for me!

I only count it if it is very heavy/intense housework that makes me sweat.

For me that is only a coupe of times a year.

DROPCONE Posts: 1,592

No. Even if I'm doing some blowout cleaning that causes me to sweat, it usually doesn't put me into any calorie burning range.

COOLRAIN Posts: 687

There are websites that will figure how many calories you are burning based on your weight, etc. and what type of activity you're doing. Since about all the exercise I got before a few months ago was walking to and from the car (I work at a desk all day and would go home and sit all evening--my husband did the housework since he doesn't work outside the home), I read up on it and learned that activity outside the norm for an individual--like housework, shopping, etc.--can be counted as activity/exercise. I figured if I was shopping and running errands for 5 or 6 hours on a Saturday, carrying heavy bags, pushing carts, etc., I was getting a lot more exercise than sitting in front of a computer for those 5 or 6 hrs.

However, as I've become more active, I don't count other activities like that so much anymore.

No.

If I were overweight by doing the dishes every day, vacuuming and dusting 1x a week, and cleaning the bathroom 2x a week...that means my body has adapted to that. It does nothing.

Now, if one day I was painting a room, or one day cleaning out the garage, or one day cleaning out the gutters...that I would count.

Now, I've heard of people changing their routine so it does count a little more. Instead of loading up all groceries to carry into house...take 1 bag at a time (6 trips). Instead of bringing up a whole basket of clothes from the basement dryer...stretch it into 3 trips - put clothes away one article at a time.

Counting things like dusting and vacuuming a exercise would be cheating and deceiving myself. They're not cardio in my book.

They CAN be included as activity though.... but I don't.

Nope. I don't generally count housework as exercise.
If it was some strenuous task that took 20 to 30 minutes that I didn't do very often, then I might count it.

Not usually, unless it's very strenuous stuff. I sometimes count gardening.

If I'm on a ladder scrubbing windows, scrubbing the walls and cabinets, or steam cleaning the carpets and I'm hot and sweaty, I would count that.

Doing the dishes, vacuuming, cleaning the toilet, no.

TRIPLEMWF Posts: 906

No, I do not. I managed to get fat while still doing housework, so I'm pretty sure it's not going to make a difference in my weight loss.

No, I do not. I might count mowing the lawn since I do that only a few times a year. Vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing bathtubs and the like are just normal everyday movement and I do not count it even when I work up a sweat. It does count toward my steps for the day, though.
