WELCOME TO SPARK!!! Congrats on taking the first step into changing your life to a more healthier one by joining the site. Spark is filled with amazing people that will motivate, support and encourage you on your journey. There is so much to learn and discover here, take this one day at a time.
A couple of things I would like to suggestion to make you Spark experience a great one.
1. Put together your own Spark page. This is a great way to communicate with other members and build relationships that will support and motivate you. You can do this by going to the START page and the green section has something about your Sparkpage.
2. Make goals for yourself. Each month I make a list of what I want to accomplish that month and break them down to smaller goals to work with week by week. This way the BIG picture doesn't seem so big.
3. Join Spark teams. There are tons of teams here and you will be able to find ones that fit to what you like or want in a team.
The key to success here is to be active and you've already started by joining. You will find that everyone is willing to help you out if you need it. Welcome to Spark. You have taken an important step on your journey by joining! I've been a member a little over 3 years. I made fantastic progress and lost 100 pounds in the first year BUT I became careless about nutrition and exercise and have gained a lot of the pounds back! I became disgusted with myself and closed my Spark account, but soon realized I NEEDED to be here. I'm back using the nutrition and exercise trackers now - they are so important. The sense of community and the friendships I have made here keep me going! Explore the site, make your Sparkpage if you haven’t, join teams, and make friends. You will find this site an amazing place full of encouragement, inspiration, advice, and support. We are here to keep everyone motivated. I’ve found that the best source of motivation on spark is posting, asking questions, and finding new friends that are in this together. We are all on this journey of a healthy live style, so your not alone in this. People need someone to believe in them. They need to know that if they take that first step out of their comfort zone, someone will be supporting them all the way. With small words of encouragement, with just a little extra time, that someone could be you. In some cases, others may just be unaware of their true abilities and potential. You can do it. My usual recommendations to folks.
-Set the fast break goals. Be a little aggressive with them in terms of excercise and nutrition. You can do anything for a week or two, right? Of course you can. In a week or two you will start to, at the very least, FEEL a difference in yourself. And most likely, you'll see a difference on the scale.
-Don't get freaked out by your long term goal. Celebrate achievement of any goals, especially early on. For me, 100 lbs was very daunting and felt unachievable at first. I ignored that goal and focussed on week-to-week achievements. That's why the fast break goals felt so effective for me.
-And don't ever fall in to the trap I did for years. You know, the one where you might not think all the stuff "they say" will work. Like food journalling or that you'll enjoy excercise or that setting goals works. Or eat more smaller meals more frequently. I used to think all that was "nonsense" that other people said because it sounds like a good thing to say. Don't rule anything out.
Boy. Was I ever wrong. They're right.
Also, don't beat yourself up if you go over on calories or something. Learn from why it happened and work to make changes.
Oh, and I learned a lot by playing the trivia. Usually there was a question with something relevant to my health/goals/etc. and the answer provided some interesting info and usually a link to more detail.
