I used to be able to find 100% sheep's milk yogurt in the US at an independent grocer so it is available but may not be so easy to find -- Whole Foods might have it. I think the farm where it came from was in upstate New York. It tasted different from Greek sheep's yogurt but it was still good.

I was just in Greece this winter for work, and the yogurt was amazing. That said, the US has some good yogurt too. Plain Dannon (full fat) and an Indian brand Desi Natural Dahi (full fat) are just plain cultured milk, which is what the Greek yogurt is. If you want it thicker, you can strain it. The yogurt in Greece was tangier, and some came in pottery crocks or glass jars, and some was made with sheep's milk, and I've never seen anything like that in the US.
My Ukrainian colleague said that when she was in the US, she had to buy organic dairy, because she didn't like the taste of regular dairy products. The organic tasted more like she was used to.

@CALLMECARRIE: I love almonds, and eat them almost daily too! I currently eat the Nice! (a Walgreens brand) honey-roasted almonds. One serving contains 170 calories and is one of the best nuts that a person can eat, providing a host of healthful benefits.
Sometimes people will ask me how I'm losing weight. Like you...I eat exercise almost daily, eat fruits (and some veggies but not many, as I'm not a veggie fan), and plenty of proteins (especially meats). And Sonic drive-ins has just added iced diet green tea w/Spenda to the menu, so I am drinking that regularly as well. I love my iced tea!
Everyone wants a magic bullet. People ask my how I'm losing my weight, and if I tell them I'm walking an hour a day and eating a lot of fruits and vegetables and lean protein, their eyes glaze over. If I say I drink a lot of green tea and eat a lot of almonds (which I do, just because I like them) they perk right up.
I cringe when I get a request to talk about "super foods"---especially when it is someone wanting a list of the top 10, etc. Do people really think that there are only a few super foods on this planet. We are filled with super food possibilities. Here is the Sparkpeople listing of common super foods....let me know if it needs an addition.

BUNNYKICKS, is that a link to a Doctor Oz website?! Oh gawd! He's a complete quack. It seems like every other week he's promoting some quackery or another. Snake oil is alive and well, and being sold on the internet!
REAL pomegranate in yogurt is actually very good. I eat yogurt (plain only - doesn't have to say "greek" on the label but it can't have gelatin in the ingredients or blechhh) almost every day, and over the winter we get a lot of imported pomegranates here... was putting a quarter cup of arils into my "muesli" along with diced apple and oats, and YUM.
I dislike yogurts that come pre-mixed with fruit, which is invariably some jammy sludge at the bottom of the container, and/or is way too sweet. It's not that hard to mix fruit into plain, to taste.
And i don't think i'll ever be interested in consuming it as a powder blended into my cold breakfast cereal!!
The humble pomegranate can save us all! We had a couple pomegranate trees in our yard (we moved 2 years ago and sadly there are none at our new house) so I had a LOT of pomegranate when we lived there -- I guess I am immortal now! :) Strangely it never occurred to me to put my Greek pomegranate in my Greek yogurt lol!!
Yes well that is because Pomegranate is a SUPER FOOD! With DISEASE FIGHTING PROPERTIES! Soooo now we toss a little pomegranate into everything because two drops of pomegranate juice negates all fat, refined sugar, preservatives and incorrect portion sizes, making literally ANY food a cancer-fighting miracle!

I find it mildly amusing that there are far, far more flavors of Greek yogurt sold in the US than in Greece. We only really have plain here, and a FEW (like 2 or 3) others that no one buys. I saw online that you can get Greek yogurt with like apple and pomegranate or something like that in the US - wow! None of that is sold here -- even if it is made here, they don't let us have any!!
Yeah, it's like when "cholesterol" was first all the rage as the evil killer demon - and suddenly you get things like dill pickles showing up on the shelves with "CHOLESTEROL FREE" on the label. Hrm. Not like pickles ever had cholesterol in the first place, as cholesterol only comes from *animal* sources....
Or oat bran. My gosh. A sprinkling of the magic powder, "now with the added goodness of oat bran!" and that sugary junk cereal becomes medicine for the ailing heart? (eyeroll emote! eyeroll emote!)
Yeahhh Greek Yogurt. I'm just waiting for "Chevron, boosting your mileage with Greek Yogurt"... sheesh.

All the articles that I post are small articles taken directly from CSPI's Nutrition Action Healthletter, Consumer Reports/Health, or Bottom Line/Personal or Bottom Line/Health newsletters.
Usually, the most recent articles are not available online so that I can post actual links to them...so I just post the source of the material. And I never claim to "own" any of the material posted.
The Greek-yogurt fad is getting pretty silly. You would think people would realize a breakfast cereal that claims to be made with yogurt would not actually have active yogurt cultures in it, but I guess you would think wrong. It's like the gluten-free craze. I realize eating gluten free is a necessity for a lot of people, but the phrase "gluten free" seems to be appearing on things like pork chops now.
So, Honey Bunches of Oats now has a "greek yogurt" flavour, capitalizing off the craze for "healthy" greek yogurt. However, the Centre for Science in the Public Interest discovered that:

FYI, I saw the cereal on clearance for $1.00 at wal-mart! I wear braces so all I could think about is that eating that cereal would hurt too much.
I thought we were allowed to quote from articles, as long as we attributed the source i.e. put a weblink in to the original that we were quoting from.... it's only "infringement" if you try and pass it on as your own words....

Fage built a large factory in NY to meet the American Greek yogurt demand -- but maybe they shut it down and started importing, I haven't checked in a few years -- check your package, and if the barcode starts with 520 then it's imported from Greece, otherwise it's probably made in NY.
The feta is only "real" if it's imported from Greece, it has to be made with sheep and goat's milk that was milked on Greek territory according to the European Union laws. Of course that does not apply to the US so they can call anything "feta" even if it's made with cow (!!) milk. It doesn't mean it's BAD it's just not the same thing.
Honestly, I think most of what makes food taste better in other places is nostalgia. Food tastes better when you're on vacation because you're on vacation. You remember the two or three really fabulous things you ate and forget the two dozen perfectly mediocre things. If you spend an extended time away from home, on the other hand, the two or three things you can't get in the new place are the things you remember most fondly. When I lived overseas many years ago as a student, we were all desperate for cinnamon gum and peanut M&Ms, because you couldn't get those outside the US back then. Within a week after I got back, I had no interest in either of those things anymore. Now I desperately miss some of the fruit we used to get there. Although, one of those was fresh pineapple, and now that we can get really good fresh pineapples in the US, the pineapple in my memory isn't quite as wonderful as it was when I couldn't have it....
It really is a shame. I wish we had more choice of food that hasn't gone through the Big Food Industrial Machine and come out as some sort of "rough approximation" of the "real thing." Yes, it's got shelf life. Yes, it's easy to make in a giant cost-effective centralized factory and distributed far and wide (oo, profits!). Yes, it tastes the same every time.
But yeah. So many things we think are legitimate-quality are really just Disney-fied emulations of reality. "Processed swiss slices" and "Greek style" yogurt and Old El Paso "burrito kits" and so on and so forth... just sigh.

Awe that's disappointing. I'm still a chobani fan but I'd like to try actual "Greek" yogurt sometime just to see the difference.
When I was young, i traveled through Europe and I had a stop in Greece, where I had REAL Greek yogurt. It was amazing and delicious.
Here in the States, the law requires that milk products be pasteurized all to heck. So, the "Greek" yogurt we have here is NOTHING like you have there! I tried it, and nearly spit it out. The crap we pass off as "Greek" yogurt is vile.
It's the same with French cheeses! They are SO delicious in France...and here, they taste less so.
It's tragic that Americans think they are getting the real thing.
I live in Greece and I assure you that we do not have cereals with yogurt already in them! I think it's quite funny how Americans now have far more flavors and varieties of "Greek" yogurt than Greeks do. Most yogurt here is plain. Greek yogurt is a very healthy food but to my knowledge it's not actually sold in the United States -- I think it's all "Greek style" and no longer imported as of the mid 2000s. So it's all just labeling anyway. I've eaten American "Greek style" yogurt and it bears no relation to actual Greek yogurt.

I always avoid prepackaged foods, including all cereals so when I saw the ads for this cereal with Greek yogurt I knew it was just a marketing ploy - you can't put what is normally a good, healthy food (that should be refrigerated) in a box and stick it on a shelf with a long shelf life and expect it to retain any of it's original goodness - not going to happen!
That is pretty much what I thought it would be when I saw the commercial. I am more aware of commericals now that I have been on SP. It amazes me what they try and make you believe is healthy. Good post!

First time I heard of Greek Yogurt was on a Dr, Oz show a while back, then BOOM! The store shelves were loaded with the stuff. Whatever Dr Oz talks about on his show hits the shelves within a matter of weeks! Wow is that guy a sales person, and manufactures take advantage of Dr. Ozs' promotions. People go for this kind of stuff in the name of "Health".
