I like to dip carrots in hummus. Never thought of using it as a spread. Sounds good though

Been making my own for years. Also do chickpeas with baked sweet potato and cumin, and I've done a really good roasted red pepper hummus. I keep seeing a recipe for beet hummus, but I'm not brave enough to try it (not really a fan of beets.)
I make my own hummus. I experiment by adding different items. I use for dip and sandwiches.

I like to use it on bread or toast, or Wasa crisp bread, as a substitute for mayo or margarine/butter. I've never "dipped" it.

I was really surprised at how easy this is to make. One can of beans makes enough to last me for several days. And so far, it has kept well in the fridge.

I'm the only one that eats it, my dh can't even look at it, so I'll stick to store bought, and I keep it in the fridge in the garage, so he doesn't see it. But it does sound easy to make, especially if you have a lot of people coming over and they will finish it all off. So, That's what tahini is for, lol.
I just whir up canned chickpeas (rinsed & drained) in the Nutri Bullet with a teeny bit of lemon (I don't like hummus with too much lemon), garlic powder and a tsp EVOO & eat it with gluten free pita pieces that I've crisped in the oven. Love it.

The last restaurant I worked at, I was in charge of creating the lunch specials.
One of our big sellers in the summer was a large garden salad with steak tips, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion slices, black olives, peppers, carrot, gorgonzola crumbles (omg this place had the highest quality ingredients, the bleu cheese was to die for!!) framing a small pot of freshly made (by moi) garlic hummus.
People loved it when it was brought to the table, it was a gorgeous presentation.

I wish we had a specialty store! We just have the International aisle at Safeway LOL.
I'll have to check at Pier One Imports ...they might have something ...
The spicy hummus recipes didn't call for tahini which is good because there isn't any in town, I plan to substitute sesame oil if I need it.

Do you happen to have a Middle Eastern specialty food shop anywhere near where you are ? Fortunately, there are a couple in and around Boston. Well, I happen to work with a guy who went to school in the UAE. We were talking about hummus one day and he told me that when he was in the Emerites, he'd get hummus in a CAN.
Really ? Because we'd talked about Tribe, Cedars and Sabra. Yes, they all can be pricey. That's when he told me I should buy the canned hummus instead. So, I took a trip to my local Middle Eastern grocery store and there is was. Canned hummus ! No preservatives ! and cheaper than the fresh stuff.
I bought one brand called California Garden. It wasn't as creamy as fresh hummus. You do need to add a little bit of olive oil if you want that creamy texture. But, one 14 oz can cost me $1.25. 8oz of fresh on sale costs me $2. it's usually $3 to $4 depending on brand.
The canned hummus was right next to the canned chick peas. It was great. I've been buying the stuff ever since.
