Excellent comparison Turtledove. And accurate for me on both counts. I love some of the old Bible movies and couldn't stand this mini-series in the same way I love some of the old gospel tunes and can't stand contemp Christian music.
KJ....not sure exactly how to elaborate on my feeling, but I'd say the combination of things like yet another white Jesus, glossing over stuff like Lott's daughters, kung fu angels, etc just make it a little too....Seventh Heaven, Touched by an Angel, family friendly, but with more violence and slicked up for ratings version of the Bible than what I'm looking for.
I'm not a Christian, but I find the Bible to be a very interesting and complex collection of stories and even given that it would be a huge challenge to really do it justice in a ten hour mini, I don't think they did much with it.
But, once again, many people enjoy it, so obviously they hit the right notes for the target viewership :)
I've seen every episode and have loved it. I was initially a bit concerned about all of the violence, but then realized that those were incredibly violent times - there were no so-called "humane" weapons (guns, bombs, etc.) so they used what they had - swords, knives, machetes, axes, etc., so it's likely a pretty accurate depiction of the way life was at that time. For those that haven't seen the prior episodes - I think Lifetime (or maybe FX?) has been replaying them too. As popular as this mini-series has been, I would imagine it will be replayed many times!
loving it! Wish there had been more on John and less violence, but I can read his stories.

I was looking forward to the mini series but didn't know what to expect. I am astounded at the quality of the production. Certainly not low budget. Very well cast with unknown actors who are doing a great job.
I realize that it would be impossible to cover every story in the bible That would take several thousand years but it certainly gave me the urge to read it for myself again.
Roma Downey is an incredible person who demonstrated exceptional character and in fact, she is the only noted actor in this series. The actor who was selected to play Mary could not do it so Roma stepped in and played the part.
I strongly urge all to at least see it. I am not a normal purchaser of DVD sets, but this will be an exception and I intend to buy the set.
I love it! They only had 10 hours to do the entire bible from Genisis to Revelation is why it jumps around so much. It makes me want to dive into my bible! It shows how much love God has for us and how the stories are in fact connected together in His awesome plan.
My son lovvvvvvves the history channel and got me hooked on that show... we tend to watch it together its wonderful.. Love the stories and they seem pretty correct to biblical times.. If it wasn't for DVR we would not have been able to watch it
It is amazing on when you do watch it on how many stories we tend to forget or even remember the people in the stories.. Almost like a bible coming to life :-))

watched the first two episodes, but because I have to work swing shift, I haven't been able to see the other episodes. Heard it was coming out on dvd so I will have to snag it when it does.
I would probably compare it to: The New Bible show is to the Old Bible Movies as Comtemporary Christian Music is to Traditional Christian Music. Kinda like "My God is an Awesome God" as opposed to "I'll Fly Away"

I suppose you mean that it focuses a lot on the reality interpretation of the Bible rather than the insightful/spiritual part in which case that's true.

I was looking forward to it, but deleted it from my Tivo and canceled the season pass after 30 minutes of the first ep. Obviously a lot of people are enjoying it, so ymmv, but for me the whole thing is just too "Bible lite," and not very compelling.

Funny story I heard yesterday on TV about Mark Burnett. Apparently he believes that a devil on earth has influenced his show by people suddenly noticing that the person who plays the Devil looks eerily similar to President Obama. He feels that as no one mentioned this similarity in the past however many shows the Devil character has appeared, that this sudden attention by the viewing audience is the work of the real Devil
To each his own. Yet it I was unaware this show was on but will watch it when it is rebroadcast by HISTORY in the summer. The channel often repeats hit shows in the summer time.

We don't get the history channel but I have heard it is great. When it comes out on dvd, I'll be getting it. I hear the ratings are #1 even over the networks who turned Mark Burnett down. How could you turn that guy down, doesn't he have a #1 show every day of the week?
I watched the first one and it seemed to be disjointed, like it kept jumping around. I didn't think it was that great. Hubby deleted it from the DVR cause he agreed. Maybe I should have given it more of a chance. Now, I'm probably going to watch The Ten Commandments because it's kind of traditional around here and, well...what's Easter without Charlton Heston, LOL.
