All the previous suggestions are great. I would also add that foam rolling can be helpful if it's a stiffness kind of discomfort. If it's really painful, though, I would have it checked by your doctor to make sure there's nothing going on there.

I too have had similar issue(s) and unfortunately running seems to be off my "options" list. I have interacted with accupuncture (YES it helped!), chiropractic, trainer, and sports massage. The latter has made the most difference, but each specialty has identified the same imbalances that are causing my pain.
Doing various stretches and strengthening exercises do help, but if I want to stay happy, mobile, and pain-free (hips) for the next 30 years, running needs to NOT be on my plate. (I'm 51 now.) I just had to decide to accept that I've done a lot to gain improvement but not enough to solve the core problems (probably stemming from previous injuries).

Good tips here: The right shoes, chiropractor and yoga stretches. I've found that acupuncture helps also.

I've also had less pain since switching back to my lower-profile shoes (my other ones were encouraging me to land too hard on my heels), and when I experienced pain for almost 2 months after taking a break from running, I went to a chiropractor who was able to find which muscle was having issues. He also assigned me certain stretches and strength exercises for that area. I have had minimal issue since (this was all fairly recent so I'm still treating, but I've been able to run again!).

Squats and lunges (seriously). Strength training will help strengthen all the little stabilizer muscles that machines don't work. Since I started taking my ST more seriously at the beginning of the summer, I have had much (many?) fewer aches/soreness in my joints during/after my runs. Also, foam rollers are great for stretching out those muscles post-run.
Does anyone have any tips on stretches or exercises to strengthen hips? I figure it's partially just because of carrying my own weight, but when I run, the part that hurts is not my knees, it's my hips! If I increase my mileage much it can get really painful. Any tips?
