I am not running anymore. I haven't in weeks but I still get stiff and sore if I don't do stretches or move around much.

You really need to cool down and stretch after you run. It helps your muscles go back to their resting length. have you tried an epsom salt bath? I've done that a few times. I have issues with my hip and that has helped. Also there are some good yoga poses that help loosen the hip: pigeon is one of my favorites. search for them here on spark. They have a wonderful library!! You probably do this already, but drinking plenty of water helps too. emoticon

I had this same problem from walking, I was walking an hour a day seven days a week. I finally stopped all together for about a month and the pain stopped. Now I am back to walking but keep it at 30 minutes a day.

1 - Don't ignore it!
2 - The older I get, the more imperative stretching becomes.
3 - Starting the day out with stretching is a GOOD thing.

4 - Look for exercises that strengthen the hip muscles. There are a LOT of connectors that wrap around the trunk to provide support. It really IS necessary to stretch!

I agree that a foam roller could be a huge help! Also, although you shouldn't stretch before a run, I find that if I don't stretch afterwards (at least for long runs), I get very stiff.

I'd agree that the foam roller can be very helpful to loosen up hip flexors. Here's an intro video on the foam roller if you're looking for more information:

you can use a foam roller or a ball (I think the smaller medicine balls are ideal) to roll out the hip flexor. Also google runner's lunge yoga pose.

I used to be a runner. Up until recently I was running as my main form of exercise. I like running because I like an intense workout that I can do anywhere. In the last year I've noticed soreness in my hips after running. I stopped stretching before and after my runs because someone told me it didn't really matter (a super exercise freak). I'm not sure if that's what started it....but I had to actually stop running because I can't get up from a sitting postion without almost falling over after a run. This lasts for like a week after a run.

Does anyone know what this is??? I've started doing circuit workouts and elliptical...which seems to be ok. But I still have issues if I straddle anything or even walk at a fast pace for a period of time.
