Thanks to Facebook our 40th class reunion in 2009 was not only a success, but it has kept us all in touch since then.
In reflection, I realized that we each grew up in one of the most exciting decades:
Music - Elvis, doo wop harmonies and a capella singing, Pat Boone, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and the Motown groups - Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, and SO many others!, Then, the English influence: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dave Clark 5, Herman's Hermits, Joe Blow and the no-shows (only kidding), and many, many more. Not to forget ELTON JOHN! - Rock & Roll was here to stay! - drugs, too...
History - JFK's inauguration, White House years, and assassination; the COLD WAR with Russia, Nikita Kruschev, Fidel Castro and the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Race to the Moon, first monkey in Space, first Space launch, first Man on the Moon, LBJ, Lady Bird, too - "Keep America Beautiful, plant a tree or a bush" was her campaign, "Don't be a Litterbug", Smokey the Bear - "only YOU can prevent forest fires" - Martin Luther King, Jr, marches, racial tension, de-segregation, riots, Kent State University shootings, Black Power, Black is Beautiful, Women's Rights, bra burning, not wearing bras! VIETNAM!
Television - I love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Leave it to Beaver, Romper Room, Mickey Mouse Club, (some of these were in the 50's), The Ed Sullivan Show, Candid Camera, the Andy Williams and the Perry Como Christmas specials, Sonny & Cher, The Smothers Brothers, the Jetsons, Scooby Doo, etc etc etc
Sports - the New York Mets - a start up team in 1962?, going on to win the World Series in 1969! (they did not do well in their first few years!) Broadway Joe Namath! Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Billie Jean King, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris (breaking Babe Ruth's home run record), Willy Mays etc etc etc
I know there is more, but I have to stop here...please know that the above just came off the top of my head...I was fortunate to live through these incredible years and be part of the Baby Boomer Generation, although at that time, I don't know if we were identified that way... just a bunch of post-war babies born to a bunch of horny young married couples...God Bless America.
