I started riding to work in early spring and at that time I was 205 lbs. I am currently down to 179 lbs. I ride every day and I ride 100 Kim's minimum on the weekend. It's hard sometimes to get up early and do that ride. But I force myself and it has payed off. I am more confident and feel better than I have in a long time. It takes a lot of discipline and hard work if you want to lose the extra lbs fast. Eat right and work out hard and it will happen I promise. That is how you get rid of a spare tire.

I don't believe that you can selectively lose weight/fat in a specific area. Choose healthy foods and keep your carbs, protein, fat and calories within the range SP recommends for you. Exercise at least 10 minutes every day - more is better - cardio 3 or 4 times/week and ST 3 or 4 times/week also. You will be building muscle... under the fat... but until you turn off the fat, which can come from any part of your body, you will not see the muscles.
There's no quick, easy way to do it, but it's worth doing!

Definitely cardio is the best way to get rid of the back "tire", and food gets rid of the front "tire". Also, doing excercises for your waist - I got some good ones off of SparkPeople and have taken an inch off of mine in just 4 weeks. I run 3 miles about every day - that has made the extra pounds really come off.
Since I started cardio again, I am beginning to notice the spare tire disappearing. It is slow going, but everytime I check that extra tire, I know I can feel it vanishing. Just more time and effort......

I've never been able to get good results from spanx...the material just gets sucked into the creases and makes me look like I have fat rolls.

I know how you feel! I WISH I could reduce my stomach/hips because thats where I keep most of my body weight I HATE my stomach/hips. I need to lose about 80-100 pounds and hopefully my stomach will go down a little bit
try spanx a lot of women wear them they may be uncomfy at first but it hides your bad areas.

TACDGB, Your board inspired me! I am trying to get back down to 115 after hitting the scale at 134 last year! I am at 127 now, but it has been a struggle...much easier when I was younger. Could you please clarify what "non-processed" foods you are avoiding, and what you are eating and drinking. Thank you.
Cardio comes a long way behind diet in terms of weight loss effectiveness, and rather than adding 5 or 10 more minutes of cardio, you are better off adding strength training to your routine.
While it is true that a less intense workout will mean a higher proportion of energy comes from fat, you will burn more calories (and fat) from going faster. But where energy is coming from during your workout is totally irrelevant to fat loss. What matters is where the balance between calories burned and consumed over the ENTIRE 24 HOUR DAY.
Spare tire I guess you mean around the middle... I have that problem and I have been exercising 5 or 6 or more hours per week... usually swimming crawl or treading water or water aerobics. Lat night I checked my waist measurement which had not changed in 4 months although I had lost 10 pounds.. I have been eating a lot of cruciferous vegetables... broccoli cauliflower and kale the night before weigh in... and had read that these can sometimes bloat...I am eating a large amount to kill cancer.. So yesterday no cruciferous vegetables instead tomatoes onions, mushrooms carrots peppers etc... todays weigh down 2 inches and 2 pounds so before the big event stay off these for a couple of days..

Cardio cardio cardio. Do different cardio excercises and often maintaining a lower heart rate helps burn more fat. If you ewalk, try increasing the incline. Or just try adding an extra 5 or 10 minutes. The extra time and work out will show extra results over time. Be patient, results will come, just dont expect overnight change.
Aschurr - if the event is coming up soon, I'd invest in a good pair of Spanx or other "controlling" undergarment. After the event, focus on your diet and consistent exercise and it will come off eventually---every body's different, and it sounds like your "spare tire" area is going to be the last to go.

80% diet and 20% exercise. So eat healthy and MOVE. Your body decides where it loses first.
The 'fat burning' zone is highly misleading. While a higher proportion of calories does come from fat with less intense workouts, you burn more total calories and more fat calories overall from a more intense workout.

ASCHURR91 - What you're describing (targeting specific parts of your body with the intent to shrink it) IS spot reducing. The way our body works, it's simply not possible! I know it's frustrating; we all have our spots that simply don't react to weight loss the way we want them too.
It doesn't matter how much arm work you do, you can't burn fat there. It doesn't matter how much leg work you do, you can't burn fat there. It doesn't matter what you do, you simply can't shrink your body fat that way. :)
This is because your muscles draw their energy from the bloodstream; not the surrounding fat stores.
We all have areas that respond slower to weight loss than others. We're all genetically predisposed to hold weight in certain places. Ever seen women with gigantic thighs, but tiny waists? Well, that's where those woman tend to hold it. I'm one that has a buddha belly, but my legs and arms look fantastic... well, I do a whole lot of core work (as a part of group classes) but my gut has not shrunk as much as my arms or legs. My mom is exactly the same way! WE tend to hold it in our middles.
In short, you can't work out a specific area of your body. Do total body strength training for best metabolism-boosting results, and know that it will come off eventually. The only thing you can do is keep losing weight.

I know that spot reducing is "not possible" but as I said even when I have lost weight in the past that part of my body doesn't seem to shrink much but the rest of my body does. That's why I wanted to know specific workout that are great for that area. I don't just workout that section of my body I do weights for my arms and legs and cardio but I'm clueless as to what workout to do for that area of my body. Sorry I guess I miss typed what I meant.

I was actually talking about an interval workout on the treadmill, not exercising in the fat burning zone. If I would do that I would never get any weight off since my body is conditioned to walking all day.

Weight loss is 80% nutrition, 20% exercise, and on top of that, you can't get rid of your "spare tire" through exercises that target that area. If you consume SP's recommended amount of calories and eat a healthy, balanced diet while exercising, you will see weight loss.
To the poster who mentioned the "fat burning zone" - exercising in the "fat burning zone" is very misleading. The weight loss you're seeing is probably from a healthy diet and exercising, not necessarily from exercising in the fat burning zone. (In any case, good job - but don't be afraid to increase the intensity of your exercise!) Quote from a SP article: "Myth #5: You will burn more fat if you exercise longer at a lower intensity.

As others have noted, we can't spot reduce areas of our bodies we don't like. It would be great if we could, but we can't. And doing a million billion crunches or sit ups won't make a spare tire go away either. We don't get to choose where the weight comes off. Genetics makes that decision. However, if you eat right, watch your portions and get some regular exercise that includes some strength training, you will see change with time.
If you want to take the weight off you must watch what you eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit. In short, you can't outrun a bad diet with exercise.
I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Set some simple goals you can stick with to start. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated.
The reason so many people give up or fall off the wagon is they set goals which are too ambitious. Try to be reasonable with your goals. Example, if you're not eating your veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. If you're not drinking your water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. If you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved those goals, then you set new ones.
And that's how you lose the spare tire. You set some simple goals that will help you learn how to eat right and watch your portions.

Unfortunately, we cannot spot reduce. In other words selectively choosing where to shrink the fat cells. Fat loss is an overall process and where we store our fat is largely part of our genetic make-up. Therefore watching your diet, getting in some good cardio and strength training workouts and you will be on your way.

well, not so much on the permanent solution, but for the event... have you tried the slimming underwear/body things? I know its only a visual fix and it reorganizes vs actually solves anything, but in the past (and even now, since I have stubborn hip and inner thigh issues myself) they've been life savers. They let you be a lot less self conscious in a pinch and *really* make a difference in tight-fitting dresses. As for the long term, cardio!

Hello. I have been dealig with this weight loss journey for a while and I keep falling off the wagon and staring back. But no matter what I can't bet seem to get rid of my "spare tire". I have an event where I have to wear a super formal dress soon and it makes the dress look horrible. I know it won't be gone by the event. But can anyone give me some tips no have always done sit ups and I never have that sore feeling where it feels like I worked out my abs no matter how many I do or what types. Please help!!! And thanks for the advice in advance.
