You can buy a small turkey breast and roast that with lots of veggies like squash, carrots, onions and poatoes (sweet and white ) No need to make mashed poatoes since you will have lots of roasted veggies. Less calories, use I can't beleive its not butter spray on your veggies.

If you need to have mashed, use skim milk or chicken broth and a little bit of butter.

You can make Stuffin' muffins to ensure poriton control. Make your stuffing, using low cal ingredients and use your muffin tin and stuff each cup with the mixture. Bake until golden on top. I add celery, onions and chopped mushrooms to mine. Use chicken broth instead of butter. Use wheat bread too.

Yes, the envelopes of gravy are fat free and pretty tasty. I add parsley to mine.

Here is a low cal version of the green bean casserole:

LOW CAL GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE

1 can (10 3/4 ounces) 98% fat free Cream of Mushroom Soup
1/2 cup skim milk
2 teaspoons soy sauce
4 cups cooked cut green beans
1 cup French's French Fried Onions

Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce and beans and 2/3 cup onions in a 1 1/2-quart casserole.
Bake at 350F. for 25 minutes or until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling. Stir the bean mixture. Sprinkle with the remaining onions.

Bake for 5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown



NO Crust Pumpkin Pie

15 oz. can pumpkin
1/2 cup fat-free evaporated milk
3 egg whites
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 cup Splenda

Add pumpkin to large mixing bowl. Add fat-free milk and whisk to blend. Add egg whites and mix again. Add salt, spice, vanilla, and sugar. Mix with whisk to blend.

Pour mixture into pie pan sprayed with cooking spray. Place into pre-heated 425 degree oven for 15 minutes. Leaving pie in oven, reduce heat to 325 and bake an additional 45 minutes, or until filling is set and knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Let cool completly before you cut into it.
Top with fat-free Cool Whip !!

Found the original recipe we use for the fresh green bean casserole. It uses crispy onions from Seneca Farms, but I haven't seen them so I've used sauteed fresh onions.

I have encouraged my family to make healthier versions of our favorites over the years. We do the green bean casserole, but use fresh green beans, onions and mushrooms and make a light sauce with low fat milk, a bit of butter and flour and bake everything in the oven (everybody liked this more than the Campbell's one). Baked sweet potatoes instead of the sweet ones with marshmallows, some stuffing and pie. I don't care for stuffing or regular mashed potatoes, so I don't miss not eating those.

You just have to balance what you like the most with what you feel comfortable with health-wise. Maybe take a walk as a family or play a sport you all like, something physical, to help balance the meal too.

Hi All!

I am "new" (AGAIN) to sparkpeople and was looking for some feedback on how others handle holidays (or other special occassions where food is a focus of family gatherings). Do you let yourself eat whatever? eat any food in smaller portions, try to do healthy comfort food makeovers, just work out a lot, any of the above?

My parents divorced and this will be the first year we are not trying to do the holidays with both of them present. My mom has Thanksgiving down for our "Lunch" together, but then I will later prepare a meal for my dad, fiance, daughter, and two younger sisters. We are all watching what we eat to an extent and since this is the start of new traditions I am not sure how to approach the big meal, essentially on my own. I am thinking we may still do a turkey (I only eat white meat anyways) and then do gravy from a packet where I can get fat free, a green bean casserole with the heart healthy campbell's and fewer onion toppings, and mashed potatoes with skim milk and little/no butter. Our dessert can be a pumpkin pie with no crust and splenda coolwhip maybe? Not sure how to do this. Normally we have the full fat version of the above plus cheesy potato bake, stuffing, other pies, ice cream etc...

I don't want to feel cheated, but I don't want to blow a week or more of weightloss with one day either. So, what does your family do? Any suggestions?
