Two of my sisters and a niece have gluten sensitivities. One suffered from major bowel issues (as did her daughter) and the other got migraines quite regularly. They cut the gluten and symptoms disappeared. The one who got migraines is a pilot and flies regularly to Rome. She has discovered a world of gluten free eating in the pasta capital of the world. So, if you find going GF helps, great. And know you won't have to miss things you may enjoy like bread and pasta.

I am gluten free because I have celiac disease. I have had a couple of friends want to try to go GF for similar issues to yours. Two have stuck with it and are very happily GF now. That said, because celiac disease is underdiagnosed, medical professionals would prefer it if people get tested before going GF just in case it's celiac. Then you can be counted among us. :) If you go GF first, the test won't come back accurately; you need to be consuming gluten for the blood test to show accurate results.

Another person said she went GF and sugar free. I think eliminating one thing at a time is a better option. Otherwise how would you know which is making you feel better?

I know people with different gluten issues from an intolerance (where trace amounts of gluten are acceptable in moderation) to Celiac's Disease (where even the slightest trace of gluten can make her very sick). The one thing I wanted to mention is that you really should see a doctor before going gluten free.

Now, let me clarify. I don't think you need to consult a doctor to go gluten free or anything like that.However, if it turns out you do have a more serious issue like Celiac's, then you need to be more vigilant about avoiding gluten. You can't be tested for this if you are gluten-free.

Then again, the tests aren't always accurate, and some people just choose to go gluten-free on their own. Just know that there's more to it than just avoiding bread. If you really want to go gluten-free, you need to be careful. It's not enough to just take the burger off the bun. Even that small amount can be a problem if you are sensitive.

Your post does have me a bit concerned as I have a lot of the same symptoms, though they have no triggers that I can see. I've gone gluten-free for a few days at a time, but I just can't bring myself to take the plunge.

Both sugar and high-fructose corn syrup contain comparable amounts of fructose and glucose. It's the fructose that does more damage.

No, I however do have a sensitivity to high fructose corn syrup-it makes me excessivly thirsty or hungry. Would be nice if some manufacturers went back to using plain old Sugar, I don't like the taste of artificial sweetners.

I have had those and a whole bunch more. Gluten-sensitivity can cause all different kinds of symptoms in different people. Many of the symptoms are believed to be cause by leaky-gut syndrome, a condition where things get from the gut into the blood stream that cause inflammation in different parts of the body. Even though gluten-sensitivity is not the same as Celiac disease, many of the same responses can occur, just usually milder. Gluten sensitivity can also be progressive, with only mild symptoms for a long time and then increasing symptoms. Many people experience far worse symptoms on whole-grain than on processed (white) grain foods.

Yes,
I am gluten-sensitive and all those issues went away when I skipped gluten and sugar. But I also know that 2 weeks may not be long enough to see all symptoms disappear. For me, some symptoms of sensitivity went away within a few days, some within a few weeks and some many months (dairy sensitivity). You will find lots of info on the paleo team on Spark.

I have been plagued with allergies over the past two years. No one can tell me specifically what I am allergic to (until I go to a specialist); however, I was reading that a sensitivity to gluten could cause nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, bloating after eating, and even acid reflux. I am experiencing all those symptoms. I am attempting to go "gluten-free" for two weeks to see if I notice any change. Has anyone ever experienced these symptoms and determined it was actually a gluten sensitivity issue?
