Okay boys, I feel your pain! I spent my 50s battling arthritis then, at 59 l had both knees replaced (surgeries 6 months apart). This corrected bowing legs, bringing my legs in 17į and changing my gait sufficiently to produce bilateral hip bursitis. Now, with roughly 50 pounds to shed, here is what I find works. . .
1. Treading water in the pool (look it up in the activity tracker, it really burns calories!) 30 min 2. Stretching & light weights, just enough to know I worked out (10minutes does that for me!) 3. Treadmill walking just enough to be barely aerobic (2-3 mph) 20 min duration.
I'm doing this twice a week now and walking as much as I can tolerate at work. Goals? 1. Climb stairs at work without getting winded 2. Steadily increase weights and reps in my resistance routine 3. Be in a position to need a new & smaller bathing suit by summer!

I am sixty years old and have osteoarthritis in both knees, and bone degeneration in my left knee, so cortisone shots are all that are keeping me moving now. I have found that walking the pool and exercising in the water helps, but getting there is difficult. I know that I have to make it a priority. I have to lose 100 lbs, before I can get the knees replaced, so it is slow go, but I have found that Sparkpeople helps my accountability by tracking my food and exercise. I would appreciate any suggestions anyone has.

Hey guys. I feel ya. I don't think I've got the extent of injuries you do, but right now I have plantar fasciitis in both feet and a tweaked back. So the two things I enjoy, running and barbells are extremely limited.
Here is the thing though, to lose weight you just need to eat less. Start developing a crazy good tracking habit. The weight falls off fast if you stick the diet. The exercise comes later and hopefully when you drop a few pounds, the exercise will be possible.

Hey Hound. I am in a similar position. My left hip went out 4 years ago and I have a new part, but it never healed well, so I can't walk without pain. I've been between 330 and 290 for the last 15 years, and just recently got surgery- I'm down 55 pounds, but I need to lose more. The only way that will happen is if I start to exercise more. But I can't walk or run. So I ride a bike when the weather is good, and I love to swim. I have a health club with a pool, but I only can get there once or twice a week.
I have a Wii Fit Plus downstairs in the basement. I find that to be fun and movtivational, and I can do more upper body when my hip acts up. I like how Wii tracks my progress and gives me set "games" to play, then it lists the calories burned and how much time I exercised (played).

Early 40ís but feels like 80 Approx 12 yrs ago I was 280lbs and not happy with my size, look or anything about me really. The only thing I was happy with was my wife and kids but I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do things with them do to my size. I started running and within a short period of time I was down to 155lbs and loving every minute of it. I stayed at that weight for a few years until I injured my knee in an accident and after that I continued to gradually gain weight. I have had a couple other accidents since, broken ankle from a fall, broken wrist with pins and cracked chest from a machine accident add to that Iím back up to 290lbs. I'm finding it difficult to get motivated to exercise because of the new ache and pains that I never had before. I know exercise to burn calories and fat and eat right to fuel the workouts but when it hurts to do those exercises it unmotivated a person real fast. So Iím here and I hope to get feed back, inspiration and I hope a few great tips.
