Find a gym you like so you enjoy going there!
My current gym has a wide range of bodies, including a few people are are easily over 300 lbs. It's been the same thing in every gym I've ever had a membership in - even at the super-trendy (and high-$$) gym I joined after college.
Pick a gym that has what YOU like & will be convenient for you. Biking? Make sure it has plenty of stationary bikes that are comfortable for you.
And think about the future too...what other things might you like?
Swimming? Find one with a pool. Zumba? Find one that offers classes. Walking? Find one with plenty of treadmills or a track. Etc, etc.
Agree that you can go to any gym! But Planet Fitness is one that boasts a "Judgement Free Zone" although how that is put into action varies by location. They also tend to be comparatively inexpensive so might be worth checking out. Check out locations, cost, availability and type of machines that you like and then pick the one that you like best.

I was also a member of Curves for a while. I think it is a great place to start. I would look at gyms in your area and see what they have to offer.
Don't worry about being judged. From what I have noticed no one really cares about me... well, unless I am using the equipment they want ;0)
Agree with everyone else about joining a gym that has the equipment/price/package you're looking for. Also, don't be afraid to try those weights or a class here or there! It's great to step outside of your comfort zone, and no one is going to be there judging you. I actually go to a local college gym, and I love it. Many of them also have swimming pools and other perks.
Also, the elliptical but not is an adaptive motion trainer (AMT) for short. It kicks your butt, but it took me FOREVER to figure out its name. :D

I go to a "regular" gym and there are people of all shapes and sizes there. Don't feel like you can't go because of your size. As others have already stated, no one is looking at you. Everyone is worried about what they are doing, not what you are doing.
I belong to a local 24hr fitness (and I have more than 50 to lose) and have seen people of all sizes. there is one woman that I really admire that comes in and kicks ass on the ...it's like an eliptical, not sure what the machine is called, and she's no skinny minnie and would kick my butt on it any day of the week. Those who said they aren't going to care about you other than if they want a machine and they're all used, are right. I adore my gym, the manager knows my name as do a couple of the other staff members, and greet me when they see me. (and it's not a small gym)
My willpower is stronger than my bad habits.

I loved Curves but the one in my town went out of business. :( Haven't ever gone to a regular gym the local gym in my town is small and I just never wanted to try it. I'll be getting married soon and moving though so I'm hoping to try out the Y by our apartment.
You've gotten some great advice here! And I agree, no one is looking at you and judging. My fiance and I joined the Y in September when I was about 50 pounds overweight, and I love it! I recommend trying out a few gyms and see what you like and how the people at the gym are. Good luck!

Why limit yourself? Don't let your size be an excuse.
You know what I think when I see an overweight person at the gym? Good for them! I have *more* respect for them than those with chiseled bodies because I know how much harder it can be for them to take that step and how much harder they have to fight.
And while you're at the gym, don't just do the bike. You need to do strength training also. It's the best way for boosting your metabolism and will help you build that lean look.
i went to LA Fitness for several years and I was about 250. I never felt that anyone pointed at me or laughed at me. The only strange looks I would get was when i did my water aerobics class, however that wasn't pointed at me it was at the class as a whole. So one day we challenged one of the body builders to join the class for one session. His entire attitude changed when he realized it really was a workout. We still got snickers and eyes rolling, but at least we changed one person's opinion.
As DRAGONCHILDE said, no one cares that you are there unless they want the machine you are on. But definitely walk in and maybe do a free week (many gyms offer this).
I agree with Dragonchilde, being overweight shouldn't influence which gym you go to.
Now, if you have a lot of options in your area, there's plenty to consider when choosing a gym. Take advantage of free trials, tours, and offers. And make a list of priorities. For some, day care, saunas, and tanning beds are a priority. Others want a variety of classes and equipment. Some prioritize based on price. So determine what is important to YOU and I'm sure you'll find a gym you're happy with.
One other suggestion: Make sure there's some room to grow. I'm not knocking Curves because many people are happy there. However, if you're in this for the long-haul, make sure that there are some different pieces of equipment to try, classes to take, personal trainers to hire...don't plan to be at your current fitness level forever. For instance, when I joined my gym 5 months ago, I had zero interest in taking classes. However, I'm at a different phase of my journey and might want to explore that soon. Thankfully, my gym also has that as an option.
I like the idea of the Downsize gym, but unfortunately there's not one near me - I live in the Indianapolis area. I might try the idea of visiting a couple of different gyms. Thanks! :)

I am planning on joining a gym soon. I plan on visiting a few in person so I can get a feel for them. Also, 2 or 3 in my area offer a free 30 day trial. I will take advantage of that so I know if it's the best fit for me. You may want to see if gyms in your area have a similar offer.

I joined a regular gym at 211 lbs.
I have never felt a moment's judgment from anyone. Everyone I've met has been super supportive and helpful, and I'm NOT in the minority! There are people heavier than me, people my size, and plenty of young fit people, but let me tell you a secret:
Those other people in the gym? Don't care about you. They aren't thinking about you, and if they DO, it's going to be "when is she getting off that machine? I want to use it."
If they do think judgmental thoughts, those thoughts generally stay behind their teeth, and they don't say anything.
Don't worry about joining special gyms. Go to a regular gym, and enjoy it.
