I've found that if I start entering the foods BEFORE I eat them, it helps keep me in check. I usually plug the numbers in first, then I know how many calories I'm going to eat. If I want to eat less, I have the motivation ahead of time. That helps a lot. Also, if I know that I'm going out and not going to be eating too great, the day before I will limit my calories to help offset the over-indulgence the next day.

That has always been my problem. I eat pretty healthy. I just eat way to many calories in a day. Sparkpeople helps me because I have to look at my calories everyday.

I've found that even though I can guess at calorie amounts really well after a year and a half of working on my weight I too do better when I have the tracker ready. Just knowing "I'm going to write all this down" makes it easier to think through each choice before they add up. It's really difficult when I'm eating with others. I eat dinner at a friend's house once or twice a week, and they try to keep track of what I can and can't eat. (I have several foods that are migraine triggers. I eat low sodium because of my blood pressure) I feel bad if they go out of their way to keep the calories low, but don't want to give up on that time with them.
One of the best feelings I ever had was when I took the bowl of leftover mashed potatoes and emptied them in to the trash!! I never thought that one small thing like putting them in the trash instead of my mouth would make me feel so empowered. The next time you have leftovers, try it. I think you will be surprised at how strong it makes you feel.

It's easy to get into the mindset of the weekend being "free" time to eat what I want, but I have found that when I know that I "have" to put my food into the nutrition tracker here on Spark People, it makes it easier to make healthier choices b/c I don't want to see my number sky rocket due to poor choices. Even though there is no one looking over my shoulder and forcing me to put food into the tracker, it helps me stay accountable.
Hang in there. This is a process and a marathon and not a race. You can do this!

Weekends are the hardest for me. I did so well for the first year of my journey but for the last 4 months it's almost like I have been sabatoging myself. I really need to stay more focused. I do really well when I plan my meals & snacks...it's the extras that are really doing me harm. If there are leftovers after dinner I will eat them...when I pass by the cookie jar I will grab one. The entire time I am thinking "do I really want / need this"...and then I pop it in my mouth anyway. I need to make my meal plan at the beginning of the day...and if it's not on the menu then I need to walk away from it.
I've noticed that I've been doing the same thing! Case in point: last week Mon-Wed were great. Thursday we went out for happy hour to celebrate a new person joining our team, and I had two beers at that, even though I had planned on just one, plus bar snacks. Friday was our company holiday party, and I ate way too many sweets. Saturday I began some holiday baking and indulged in one or two of every kind of cookie I made.
I, like you, am back on track this week! I'm meeting a sorority sister after work for drinks, but I plan on eating well all day and then just one glass of wine this evening.
I'm getting really frustrated that none of my pants or skirts fit so definitely need to make some changes soon!
I hope you were able to stay on track at your holiday party. I did ok on Saturday, but Sunday I totally got off to the wrong start. I did exercise though and tomorrow is a new day so I won't beat myself up about it.
TCG...I know just what you mean about the weekends. It just turns into a free fall. It doesn't help that there is always a work related or social outing that comes up. It is SO hard for me to stay on track when I am around other people who are indulging. Tomorrow is my holiday party and it's open bar and food galore. Saturday I have two parties to attend-one at 3 and one at 7.
I am so nervous about if I'll have the strength to stay on track this whole weekend. I am going to avoid the alcohol because I'd rather eat than drink. I am going to try and eat more veggies and fruit, and lean meat if they have it than anything else at all the parties. I will make my big treat dessert.
I totally understand what you mean. I eat healthy some days, but then other days I treat my body like it's a garbage can by eating anything I want. In the past I've used the weekend as an excuse to eat what I want, but this only derails my success. I'm trying to recommit to SP so this time around I'm going to make eating healthy a way of life even on the weekends. That's not to say I won't indulge sometimes, but it won't be every weekend.
So I've been paying attention really carefully to how I eat. I've also been reading a lot of the boards to learn from others. I finally noticed that I don't healthy the MAJORITY of the week. Thus, I may have four random days of eating something (meal, dessert, etc) that is too calorie heavy to sustain any weight loss and doesn't provide enough nutrients. I've been underestimating the effects of eating too much calorie/sugar heavy foods on consecutive days.
This is where my focus is now-eating well every day. Increasing and normalizing my fruit and vegetable, water, and healthy fats intake.
