For most people, weight loss is 80% nutrition, and just 20% exercise. So just watching your intake is a good place to start even without exercise.
Cycling (either stationary or real), the elliptical and swimming/water walking are all great zero-impact exercises.
Low to moderate impact exercise can help strengthen your joints and adjust your body for higher impact activities. Low impact DVD's can be fun workout. And walking is a great low-to-moderate impact exercise as well.
2.5 years ago when I was in such bad shape I started out marching in place. Not original, but it was free and portable. I did it during commercials and progressed to doing during whole shows.
Besides walking, I would think that doing things in water such as water aerobics would also be easy on the joints.
Walking is one of the better ones out there. It's free because you can do it outside. Start with about 15-30 minutes and build up from there. Once you feel more in control, you can start adding strength training.

I have heard that being overweight is hard on your body, joints, knees, etc. What is a good exercise to start with to get some of the weight off before trying higher impact exercise?
