Thank you! I went to a different class today and this one was energizing. I left feeling more awake and bouncy and this time just wanted to blast the music in my car and sing and dance. A very different experience, but no less enjoyable for it.

It's still so new, and I obviously can't say how I will feel in the future, but I have never been this excited about any exercise/fitness/wellness program ever. I can't wait to get back in there!

What a beautiful summation of your first yoga class!

You touch on at least two things I didn't mention: the sense of community in a class and also the fact that deep feelings can come up during the poses and meditation. Not every class has these attributes and you're fortunate to have experienced them early in your exploration.

And silence, yes. It changes your perspective on what we consider to be normal sound and stimuli in our lives.

So pleased you had a memorable experience!

A good yoga class can be magical, and it sounds like you found a great teacher. Enjoy!

Thanks so much for the support, everyone! I was running around all day and didn't get a chance to follow up. This is what I sent a friend earlier, at lunch. :)

So I had my first yoga class ever today! I've been trying to figure out a way to articulate what it was like for me for the last two hours, and all I can come up with is "powerful."

It was hard, and my muscles are definitely still feeling it, but it was so much more than just a challenging workout. During the meditation, in the last few minutes of class, some emotion I still can't name brought tears to my eyes.

When class ended, I was struck by how quiet everyone was. We all left in almost complete silence. It wasn't a tense or sad silence, as people were smiling and obviously happy.
When I got in my car, I ended up turning off the music and making the 25 minute drive home in silence. I don't know--the music I always depend on in my car just felt like it was vulgar. It just felt somehow wrong to break the silence too quickly.

I'm still not really able to explain my feelings about the experience, even to myself. The only thing I do know is that I need to do it again, as soon as possible!

I hope you enjoyed your class, and you probably found that in general, each student is concentrating on his or her own practice of the poses - and not paying attention to anything or anyone else.

Yoga stretches and strengthens the body and you were right to choose a gentle class. And hopefully, the calming powers of the poses settled your nerves.

Let us know how it went!

Thanks, everyone! It's only 8:25 here and my class is at 9:30, after I drop the kids off at school. I'm still nervous (I have this thing with working out in front of people lol), but I'm really excited too. I'll let you all know how it went!

I really like yoga - never thought I would! After a few classes, you become a lot less self conscious about being there (or at least I did) Hope it goes well!

I took my first yoga class last summer and absolutely loved it, but since it was a 20 minute drive to the place, the price increase, and I am not working I haven't been back. I will go back once I start working again though!

I am so excited for you! You posted originally yesterday and today is the 21st, so that means the class is today! I hope you enjoy and do, as Zorbs mentioned, let the instructor know you're new. Some of the poses can be challenging and there are modifications.

How did it go?

I also did my first yoga class last week.
It was fairly easy, just stretching, but I can see how with practice it can really
build the core.

Arrive a bit early so you can introduce yourself to the instructor. Let her know you are new to yoga and have heard good things about her class. It is really nice for the instructor to have this information, she/he wants you to succeed. Have fun!

I have never done yoga before, though I have always been drawn to it. I never wanted to start with videos because I always felt that it would be best for me to have an instructor, especially in the beginning, to help me know how to do the poses properly. But I've always been self conscious so put it off for years.

Anyway, I finally worked up the nerve earlier in the week and signed up to the class before I could talk myself out of it with silly negative talk. Now I'm committed, so I'm going tomorrow morning. I'm really excited and really nervous at the same time.

The yoga studio is highly recommended by friends, and I signed up for a gentle yoga class that goes through the poses slowly and holds them longer. Is there anything I need to know? Anything I should ask? Do I need to bring anything besides myself?
