Ok so basically this thread is not really asking for advice on how to cope with or avoid the situation, it's more of a blog, explaining your already-decided-upon plan of how you will manage an unavoidable situation.

When I do a buffet, I try to be sure I eat well at breakfast, and then I have small portions of the things I know I want at the buffet. If you take something and you don't like it - DON"T FINISH! Don't waste the calories.
Now, today's trip was cancelled, but it may possibly be rescheduled for next week since it's the last Sunday before my sister leaves for the summer. I do plan on letting it be a bit of a cheat meal since I already know my ability to resist temptation gets weaker and weaker the longer I'm there, and if I plan on it being a cheat, I'll be able to get back on track much quicker.
My plan is to track it as a generic "Chinese Buffet" on MFP. I will start off with the Mongolian barbecue with lots of veggies, some lean protein, and an egg. I figure this should be relatively safe and take the edge off my hunger. Then, I'm still going to eat whatever I want, but I'm hoping that my first course will fill me up so I'm unable to eat as much of the junk food.
It was the comment about having a coupon. Besides, that was really irrelevant to the issue at hand.
Thing is, I was TRAINED at a young age that All you can eat means "All you can literally stuff in your face without getting sick." I've learned how to pace myself so I'm able to eat as much as possible- to a point where it is purely habitual. I've also learned to make multiple trips and only select a couple items at a time (partially to keep certain foods from touching, and partially because more plates- even with smaller amounts- appeases my parents when they pressure me to get my money's worth). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the only time my parents didn't make sure I understood that I need to get my money's worth from a buffet was when I was under the age of 3 and my parents didn't have to pay for my meal.
Besides, this wasn't "I need suggestions on where to go out to eat" it was "This is where I am going. I need advice." I really don't get to select where we go for family dinners. I have to deal with it. SOMETIMES, YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH A DINING SITUATION THAT IS NOT IDEAL.
Actually, Zorbs, my friend treated last night and today was supposed to be for my sister's graduation. And these are actually relatively inexpensive buffets.

Buffets are super expensive..especially when you're not eating your money's worth.
Do you have coupons for free meals at both of these places?

Buffets can definitely be a challenge. With so many different choices, we can't help but want to try a little of everything. The problem ? Each trip to refill our plate can cause the calories to add up fast.
What do I do when I go to a buffet ? I try to load up on the veggie dishes. I avoid the fried stuff. If I happen to see some fried shrimp (I do love fried shrimp), I have a small portion. Avoid the fried chicken, that's how buffets make their money. they get people to fill up on the cheap stuff.
If you're going to a Chinese buffet, try to avoid the fried stuff. Look for steamed or stir fry options. See if they have fish. Eat the fish or shrimp dishes. If they offer sushi or Mongolian Hot Pot, have that. Hot Pot is low in calories because it's a type of soup. In fact, have the won ton soup. Soup can help fill you up and it's tasty too. Soup is always a good choice in a Chinese restaurant.
Mostly, try to watch your portions and keep it down to one or maybe two small plates. Like I said, the more trips you make, the more calories you'll consume.
Somehow, I went from rarely going to Chinese buffets to going to two different ones in one weekend.
I'm a little nervous as to how I'm going to handle this little challenge. I already made the decision to go with a generic "Chinese Buffet" entry on MyFitnessPal for tomorrow's trip since I know there's really no good food there that's healthy- and that was originally going to be my one buffet trip, but now I have the added challenge of facing the same situation two days in a row.
I did hear that this place I'm going to tonight has sushi and seafood, so I'm probably going to gravitate towards that anyway, and I can always remind myself that I can still have the spare ribs and other goodies that I love TOMORROW, but it's still going to be a bit of a challenge.
Fortunately, I did sleep in today and I have over 1,000 calories left today and I'm honestly not even that hungry.
