The glycemic index is a way to compare foods based on how quickly they will be digested and get into your blood stream as blood sugar. Although there is some controversy about it, I think it helps to know which foods are more likely to spike your insulin and even cause hunger sooner. If you can familiarize yourself in a general way with the glycemic values of food, it may help you when planning meals, and especially snacks where a single food is often eaten.
