Thanks for the suggestions everyone. He adores reading, so books are always a safe route with him, although he reads so much a gift card or random book would probably be better for him. I just got him an odometer for his bike to help him get ready for his ride, but the bike tools are a good idea. My mom is going to give him an engraved pen/pencil set. We just have to pick out the set now. He also loves writing and anything with his name on it is an instant hit since it we have to have things specially made in order to have his name on it.

If he's participating in a charity bike ride, he might enjoy a bike tool. They are pocket knife type tools that cycles keep with them to "tweak" their bikes. They come with hex head wrenches, screw driver, etc...
This one is a little over the top, but there are simpler models.
I know nothing about the event. I think books are always a nice gift to give and it would be something he could hold in years to come and remember you. Unless he hates reading, I would look for a book.

I've never heard of it. Sounds very nice. I agree, something fun

Interesting traditional ceremony. I didn't see a standard age but I got the impression that it starts when the boys are rather young. So after all of the religious ceremony is completed he might enjoy something fun.
Think about what he likes to do for fun and see if you can find something that fits with his interest. I
If he likes comic books then there is a lot of neat Captain America stuff available.
Movie tickets if he likes movies, tickets to Golf N stuff or other local attraction, or a trip to the local bookstore (my favorite!) might be something he likes.

I nanny for an Indian family and their son is having a Upanayanam/Poonal ceremony next month. They have asked for donations for a charity bike ride he is doing in lieu of gifts, but I want to get him something anyway. I've been their nanny for 8 years and so I'm fairly close with the family. The problem is, I don't know what to get. I've been researching and quite a few sites I've found have suggested books or other things that might be useful (i.e. pens, watch-he has one he really likes already, silver). I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any experiences with something like this. I'm planning on donating for his bike ride, but just want to do something a little extra just for him. Thanks!
