I grew up drinking whole milk (and eating full fat yogurt, full fat cheese, etc.) and I was SO happy when I moved out and switched to nonfat. To me, it tastes so much better (lighter vs so heavy).

In the end, it's all about what you like and can eat. Like Becky said, if you really dislike the nonfat or skim milk, drink the whole in reasonable amounts but make up for it in other areas (e.g. fat free mayo, salad dressing, etc.) .

The nonfat greek yogurt is really thick and creamy, so you may find that this is one nonfat dairy product that you'll like. I like Fage 0% plain (so I can flavor it how I like).

I drank skim for years and it really is vile stuff IMHO. Now I'm not afraid to eat fat anymore and drink 2% milk, and eat 2% yogurt, and cottage cheese on a daily basis. It really is filling and nutritious. If you don't enjoy the 2% just stick to whole - but you won't have the calories to be drinking it by the cupful.

Another thing you could try is almond milk which is low in fat and also delicious.

You could also try keeping smaller containers of each on hand, and use the skim in dishes that have other flavored ingredients-- for instance, use whole milk on cereal, but skim for smoothies and sauces.

skim on its own makes me feel ill, so i drink almond milk now :)

i second the greek yogurt- it's delish! great with fresh fruit or as a substitute for sour cream.

I'm another who can't stand skim milk, so I drink semi-skimmed. That being said, have you tried fat-free/low fat Greek yogurt? Greek yogurt is strained to remove the whey, so not only is it higher in protein than the regular variety, it's thicker, too.

Do you eat pulses/legumes? They're a good lean source of protein, so if you're struggling to keep your protein and fat consumption within range you could try adding more lentils, chickpeas and beans to your diet, if you don't eat them already.

In general, though, if you can't stand as low as 1.5% you're not going to be able to tolerate skim, so I would suggest going for semi-skimmed milk, yogurt, etc. for now and re-considering switching to skim when you're used to them.

It takes a while to get used to but once you do it's great. I can't do fat free cheese though.

If you find you prefer a fuller fat dairy product then that can be worked into your eating plan.
Be sure to use fat free, low-fat versions of other foods to balance it all out. Fat free salad dressing, mayonnaise, extra lean meats, etc.

IOANA_: Maybe transitioning would work. Slowly, but steadily, work toward drinking 100% skim milk. My wife was a farm girl, and they drank whole milk regularly. She made the switch to skim and much prefers it now.

I never thought back when I was drinking regular Mt. Dew and regular Dr. Pepper that I would ever like diet sodas. The first time I tried diet Mt. Dew, which I got by mistake, I did not finish it. Then eventually I grew to really like diet soda and detest the sweet regular. I don't drink any diet soda now; but I think the connection is that if you give yourself time, you will find that skim milk will seem "normal" eventually.

So, I've been going through the whole changing your dietary habits lately, and sparkpeople has been of GREAT help making that happen. I just have one problem, and I've been having it for as long as I can remember the term "diet": Skim, fat-free dairy products.

See, I grew up with farm-milk readily available; going from that to the 3%whole milk in stores was pretty hard, but I managed. I tried 1.5%(which is ok in coffee but not much else) and *shudder* 0.1% milk, yoghurt and other dairy products and they taste like soiled water =/ (and yoghurt which is way too liquid to do anything). How do you get used to it? I've been noticing a lack of protein in my diet unless I include more dairy, but I just don't have the heart to go skim. Is there some trick to making it taste like something?
