Here's how I see it. If you aren't making funny gym faces then you're probably not pushing yourself hard enough.

In the Olympics, some of the gymnastics competitions are partially judged on facial expressions. The athletes are doing all these amazing feats of strength and flexibility but they have to maintain a pleasant and relaxed expression.

Heh. I am usually scowling during a tough workout. Sometimes, to challenge myself in a different way, I force myself to smile during a workout. It helps me associate exercise with feelings of happiness.

oh I definitely make faces but more so when I'm doing certain exercises - squats at the smith machine with a challenging weight I certainly make faces like I'm in pain but the funny one for me is when I'm doing alternating dumbell raises I have a lip twitch that almost looks like I'm doing an Elvis upper lip lift - I keep catching it and end up making another weird face to prevent that one!!

Lord yes. I see myself in the mirror all the time. I used to make cracks with my trainer about the faces he probably saw.

I look like a strangled monkey. I don't care... I'm there to WORK!

This bugged me about a couple of ladies I had when learning to be PT. They would each swear to me "I really couldn't do another one" but they were not making gym-faces. I really couldn't get them to try a heavier weight than they had, but they never looked like they strained.

I call it "pain face". If you are working at the proper intensity, you shouldn't be looking smiling and pleasant through the last few reps.

Do you make them when you're working hard at the gym? I work out at Curves and frankly I don't see alot of the members pushing themselves very hard, but I do, so I don't have much to compare to. I have to wonder if other people make squinty, concentrating faces when pushing hard through a workout. I often get really red and sweaty when I'm doing a challenging cardio work-out like a Zumba class or running on the treadmill too. I often wonder if others look as goofy as I do at the gym.
