I don't have a lot of smoothies because I prefer regular chewy meals; it's not like you can't be a successful dieter without smoothies. But a cup of yogurt, a cup of ripe strawberries, a cup of nonfat milk, an overrripe banana -- throw a few things like that in your blender and you can make something wonderful sometimes. I just have to be careful because the calories per serving can really add up if you're not careful.

I freeze excess bananas when they start to get brown (we're green banana eaters), but I cut them in thirds or quarters before freezing, because I like just a little banana in my smoothies. I've also started experimenting with using green tea or raspberry herbal tea for the liquid, because the milk/soymilk/juice was contribuing to too-high calorie counts for my comfort. A typical smoothie for me is 2c spinach, 1/2c greek yogurt, 1c frozen mixed fruit, 1/4 banana, 1T chia/flax seeds and enough tea to blend. Or sometimes I do a coffee smoothie with Starbucks instant coffee, 1c vanilla soy milk, 1/4c greek yogurt and a little almond butter. I do a super light breakfast before the gym and a big smoothie after, so it's my main sustenance until lunch.

I prefer food that I can chew, but SWEDIEPIE & ERINTFG's recipes sound yummy. I like the idea of freezing the banana and also adding the oatmeal. Thanks!

I have a smoothie for breakfast pretty much every day. Since it's taking the place of a whole meal, it has more calories, but it's good stuff. :)
90 grams spinach (I just fill the blender right up) about 1/2 cup water
blend until all the spinach is chopped up nice and tiny and blended with the water
1/2 cup plain nonfat greek yogurt 1 banana 1/4 cup cooked oatmeal (mix 2 tablespoons oats with 4 tablespoons water and microwave 30 seconds) honey to taste (I HAVE to add the sweetener, but not everyone does; I would try it without first.)
blend it all up really well
1 cup frozen fruit (I use a combo of whatever I have in my freezer-- right now I have blueberries, strawberries, peaches, and pineapple)
use the ice chop setting to get it all blended.
I have had a green smoothie for breakfast almost every day this year, and after a bunch of trial and error this is the way I like it. It keeps me full all morning. I add the oatmeal b/c I need fiber; you can also add flax seed if that's an issue for you, or you can make it without.

Here are two of my favorites for a little bit of energy:
1 cup unsweetened almond milk 1/2 frozen banana (I peel and halve my bananas and store them in the freezer so that I don't have to use ice.) 1/2 cup berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
Or my "shamrock shake" 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 1/2 frozen banana 2 cups fresh spinach a tiny drop of peppermint extract
A smoothie is fruit and/or veggies tossed in a blender with some sort of liquid. Beyond that, there are no rules or anything. "Smoothie" is kind of like "soup"-- there are as many ways to do it as there are people doing it. And just like soup, it can be a healthy food that helps you get vitamins and other nutrients that are missing from your diet, or it can be a HUGE calorie bomb that's not very healthy. (Smoothie King has some on their menu that have twice the amount of added sugar you should get in a day, and one with more fat and calories than a Big Mac Value Meal!)
I make them occasionally when I need a snack and haven't had much fruit for the day. My recipe is a cup of frozen fruit and a little over a cup of skim milk. If I have fresh spinach or kale, sometimes I'll put some of that in, too. It comes out to less than 200 calories, and for that I get 1/3 of my calcium requirement, some protein, and depending on the fruit, a decent amount of fiber and vitamins. Berries are a favorite; they're high in nutritional value, low in calories, and frozen ones are usually a good value.

I'm not a smoothie drinker, and well, they won't make you lose weight (they're just helpful for managing calorie intake), but the basic principle is you stick a bunch of yummy stuff in a blender and make it into a drink. :) You use a blender, usually, to mix everything up into a smooth, drinkable concoction (hence the name smoothie.)
A very simple one might include banana, strawberry, and milk, for example.
Some use ice, some throw in protein powders or peanut butter, chocolate, or more.

Hello, I have a ridiculous question I would like answers to, please. I have heard a lot of people say they drink Smoothies when they are trying to lose weight or before they work out. I have heard lots of wonderful reviews on these concoctions, from strangers, friends and family. The problem, though, is that despite all I've been told about these drinks, I have never once gotten a recipe or guidelines as to what makes up this so-called "Smoothie". So, the question is: What is a Smoothie, and how do I make one? Any ingredients are welcome. =) I just want to know what is in the illusive Smoothie. Thank you.
