Walmart could care less, unfortunately, as they laugh their way to more mega million dollars profits and bonuses for their own upper echelon. I believe that if this really ticks you off, you as a consumer should boycott the place, maybe if millions of us refused to shop there they'd go bankrupt, which would make me smile.
The best idea I heard was to penalize any company that paid its employees less than a living wage, including hours, the amount of money those employees got in public benefits: food stamps, housing voucher, whatever. Won't happen because our politicians are in the pay of the ultra-rich.
The right thing to do has multiple facets, much like weight loss, fitness and life style changes. On the consumer level, boycott, but let the company know.
On the company level, employees should work for collective bargaining. It needn't be a formal union, but strength in numbers.
As for the company itself, pay a living wage for the area, including housing costs.
One problem is we tend to have to take a job at those income levels. I'm a degreed professional in a dying business. After my last reporting position dried up, I hopped over to healthcare. I chose a quickly accessible form, massage therapy. I'm very surprised at the number of advanced degree holders in my business. I am an employee currently, and the pay is, well, lacking. But steady. For now, it's good enough. Now, I do theoretically have options. I could risk my position and agitate. As I build a private clientele, I can do just that.
So what do we do with those who must take the job that is offered?
We can apply pressure. We can walk away form the bargain that merely costs someone else.

I actually saw that on the news, I think the proper thing to do is to give their employee's a gift card to the store. So many are Super Walmart's now they could always use it as a tax write off I'm sure. They are admitting they don't pay their workers well, my SIL worked there and they treated her like crap.

I worked for companies that did pay living wages where employees organized this for other employees in need. I'm sure that a large part of the reason this has come to light is because Walmart is everyone's favorite hated store. No matter who organized the drive for less fortunate employees, Walmart is going to look like the bad guy. Yes, they have questionable and not great business reputation and practices, but if this was the effort of an employee I'm glad that someone there cares enough about their fellow employees to make sure their families have a good holiday season.

Everyone has their own stories as to what they did, why they did it and what happens during their lifetime. Life is unpredictable and you just have to make the most of what you have. Everyone will not be successful, everyone is not college material, management material or small business material. We have to help those that can not do better for themselves, but are given a good effort. Not everyone is lazy, some people are hard working, but based on circumstances (some beyond their control can not get a break)

I am anti walmart because I know people that worked there and they treated their employees poorly.
Back when I shopped at Walmart. I shopped online and I kid you not. There was a pair of shoes on their website for no less than $300. As in three hundred dollars, no mistake with the decimal point.
And at the store I was looking for a pair of khaki pants and the pair of Miss Tina khaki pants cost $40. I found a name brand pair at Kohls on clearance. The original price was less than $40.
We will see that more often if Walmart is allowed to run all the other stores out of business.
I don't mind spending more money when the employees are treated better. Costco treats their employees nicely. So I now prefer Costco over Sam's Club. Membership is more expensive and the items can be more expensive.
Here Wal Mart is. Sad food pricing goes up so many items unaffordable to many, even those that work minimum wage to make a living. Mostly its the unhealthy items that are "on sale" each week such as canned spaghetti items, budget friendly frozen tv dinners, white pasta, white store brand bread/buns, high sugar cereals, and so on. This is all some people have to eat for the week. Some stores do not reduce the "healthier items" so it is donate to food pantries.

some jobs (entry level, no post HS education or experience required) are not meant to pay a living wage. They are meant to be second jobs, or to help with expenses while you further your education to find a better opportunity in the job market.
If you are doing a job that anybody can master with very little training...well, chances are that somebody who will work for less is going to come along. If it was YOUR business, what would you do? Pay somebody $15 or $20/hour to stock shelves?
I'm not a fan of Walmart, and I do not shop there. But I know people who have worked there many years - and they ARE making a living wage, and being treated very well. Why? Because they work really hard and have a store manager who appreciates them. They have shown initiative and taken more responsibility - BEFORE they were asked.
When the new Walmart opened in my town, the manager had 3 employees meet him at the old location. He hired a limo to take them to the new store. They were all his long-term employees (15 years or more). He paid for that out of his pocket.
There are GOOD managers at BAD companies, and there are BAD managers at GOOD companies.
every single full time job I have ever had I moved up. I was the youngest assistant manager in the history of my first employer-a pizza chain (I was 19!); I was the youngest store manager in the history of my second employer.
it's not ALWAYS a given, but in most cases if you work really hard, it will not go unnoticed.

There are companies that buck the trend, Costco and Amazon come to mind. Amazon hasn't reported a quarterly profit in years because they keep investing any profits back into the company for new projects but investors love the company. Costco (as discussed on this thread previously) starts all employees at over $10/hour and generally promotes within. Consumers can change the way corporations work by choosing to patronize companies that fit their values. Just look at what the bus boycotts in the South during the 60s and 70s did for civil rights.
I am clueless ...and I admit it. On one hand we want to give jobs to as many people as possible... On the other we want stores that sell at greatly discounted prices. And We want everyone to have decent jobs that at least pay the cost of living. A lot of discount stores have come and gone...they didn't last. Companies need to show a profit or investors sell their stocks , the companies go bankrupt. and those employees lose their jobs, and we are back to square one.
I don't know the answer..

I have been working for the last 40 years for many different private companies as well as governmental entities....from McDonald's to a federal agency.....at every job, we collected donations for other employees who were struggling for whatever reason -- and especially around the holidays. I really don't understand why some folks are so anti-Walmart. I mean I understand that in some places, the smaller "mom and pop" shops went out of business when Walmart came, but Walmart brings tons of jobs to tons of people and lower prices. Anyway, I think they are like many other employers who do their best. I started working at McDonald's for $1.82 an hour. I didn't expect to live on that (alone) ... I was still living with Mom and Dad. From there with raises, you work your way up. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year!

How does "The Right to Work" play into this scenario? These employees have the right to work for whatever wages they want to work for and if Wal*Mart has a set wage to pay them then those employees should know that ahead of time and then choose whether or not to work for Wal*Mart, isn't that what the "The Right to Work" movement is all about? (tongue-in-cheek)
Most companies hold food drive to help the less fortunate not their own employees. If the employees put this together they should talk to their supervisors to organize something that helps those employees that they are trying to help.

This is yet another chance for Walmart haters to jump on the bandwagon and jump to conclusions and make it seem as if Walmart is the ONLY big company out there paying low wages while making a nice profit at the top.
When we got on this topic awhile back, a member here actually motivated me to read an article about how much better Costco treats their employees. There are no Costcos in my area, but I can tell you the Targets and Kmarts, and Mall stores, and grocery stores in my area DO NOT TREAT their employees better than Walmart does. I know several Walmart employees. None that I know of are the main or only breadwinner for their household. Two are managers and like their job, and say it is better than previous jobs they have had in their lives. The others that I know are reasonably happy with their job as well.
There are many who jump at opportunities to make Walmart look bad and yes I think this whole thing has been twisted in a way never intended by the originators of the idea.
I heard a statement was made by a Wal*Mart spokesperson saying that many of their employees are outraged at the negative attention this is getting and that the media has framed it wrong. No source to give since I forgot to remember where I heard this, sorry.

I read another article that said it was started by employees, not the store itself. Someone also said it's been done in the past when a person has fallen on hard times (divorce or spouse losing their job). IF those are the real reasons, I think it's a good thing for people to help each other out. However, if there are single employees who are the only breadwinner in the family, then that's a whole different issue.

I have been to WalMart maybe 3 times in the past 5 years because of their business practices. Besides the low wages, most employees can't afford the insurance they offer-at least here in WI. WalMart is in the top 3-in fact they may be #1- for employers whose employees have to rely on state-funded health insurance. I laugh when I see the new commercial that is on the air, with "employees" talking about about the great opportunities & benefits they have working for WalMart.
For them to say this Food Drive is an example of what a "family" they are & how they take care of each other is a joke. Didn't I read they also have a plan where employees can donate, pre-tax, a portion of their pay to a fund that provides financial assistance to other employees in need? Boy, the WalMart suits sure have it made-they get their own workers to give money to other workers. Why would they issues a better living wage, raises, & affordable benefits when they can let the workers give each other money & food instead?

Just read the link and it made me sick! They are having low wage employees bring in food to donate to other employees. Walmart should give all their employees a free turkey at least. Better yet, why doesn't Walmart throw a big Thanksgiving dinner for the employees and their families. I think Sam Walton would roll over in his grave. I hope he haunts his greedy family that makes hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses every year. And that's just their bonus. I bet their salaries are in the hundreds of millions, also.

Now thats gutzy---shows those employees are not making enough in wages in my book. Why should donating by customers being paying for these under paid employees, when Wal Mart makes great profits? Shameful, they should be helping their own employees to have a meal on the table for their families for the holiday without asking for donations.
