In 9 months, I lost 90#. It takes commitment. It takes perseverance. It takes planning. You have proved your ability to apply yourself by earning your PhD. Now it is time to earn your FIT. emoticon

Hello all -

I'm K. I'm 29 and newly minted PhD student in biology. My advisor informed me today that he and I will be doing 2 months' worth of fieldwork in a country in eastern Africa in summer of 2014. Fieldwork in our field is intense even at local sites - on a limited timeline in a country that's not cheap to travel to is even more intense. Let alone the fact that it's equatorial!

So after my initial "OMG I can't believe they're paying me to mess around with my study organism in AFRICA!" reaction to the e-mail notification, I had reality hit me hard. I'm nearly 270lbs on a 5'8" frame. I would be next-to-useless in the field in my current condition. So I have a year to change that. And so here I am.

-K.
