First don't beat yourself up about it, it has happened to all of us and no one is perfect. Next time eat something healthy beforehand, or since it's a pot luck bring something healthy that you can have a lot of and still stay on track. I try to really limit the amount of alcohol I have because I tend to eat more.

I agree w/ eating beforehand can help, but if you're like me, and will eat even if you're not hungry, try taking some mints or gum. Eat the proper amount, then just have the gum/mints the rest of the night. Also for the drinking, have a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have. This will slow down the alcohol consumption.

Try to eat something beforehand so then you are not so hungry and go out of control.

Hi there!

It happens to all of us. Some people recommend that you have a salad beforehand to help fill you up and drinking some water. Alcohol is known to make you eat more too. It's ok to sample; never deprive yourself! When you want something and deprive yourself, you tend to eat more (not you personally, you in general). That's all I have. I hope this helps!

Went to a pot luck this evening and had so many calories. After having a few glasses of wine I just could not resist the layer nacho dip and the chocolate truffles. How can I better prepare myself for these events in the future?
