It might be more of a "Hawaii" thing, than a "US" thing. I have no problems finding fat-free plain yogurt in almost any brand. The low-fat ones are actually harder to find!.
Or do you mean yogurt with artificial sweeteners? I wouldn't know about that, since I don't eat artificial sweeteners. (and you won't find just fruit added yogurts - Americans like their sweet tooths!) That being said, a Chobani low-fat blueberry yogurt (6 oz), is only about 120 calories. And non-fat is almost identical (they make up for the missing fat calories by adding starch and a bit more sugar! you can tell by comparing labels). I actually tend to favor the ones with a bit of fat, rather than extra sugar.
In either case, I'd suggest to just try to find plain yogurt, low fat or non-fat and add your own fruit (you're in Hawaii fer goodness sakes! Surrounded by papayas and pineapples and star fruit and mangoes and who knows what else!)
I've never seen sugar and fat free yogurt. There's Yoplait and other lite yogurts hat have no fat, and I've seen carbmaster, which is really low sugar, but has a little fat. It's Kroger store brand, though, what I've seen.
My husband and I are leaving for Maui in a bit. All the other times we've been there I've been unable to find any fat-free, low-calorie yougurts. . The best I've found is "low-fat" or "no-sugar, but never a combination of both, which we have here in Canada. We generally shop at Costco, Walmart, or Thrifty's ? when we're there but haven't found any yogurt that fits the bill there. Would one of our kind American neighbors please give me some direction on a name brand and where to get it? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!
