Mercola is not a reputable source for any health information.
Mercola has been the subject of criticism from the business, medical and scientific communities. A 2006 BusinessWeek editorial criticized Mercola's marketing practices as "relying on slick promotion, clever use of information, and scare tactics." In 2005, 2006, and 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Mercola and his company to stop making illegal claims regarding his products' ability to detect, prevent and treat disease.
A lot of myths like have a big breakfast and eggs have too much cholesterol are beginning to see we have been wrong. If you are not diabetic...... then I think some kind of fasting might be okay but not for 30 days or whatever..

I agree with Dr. Mercola who suggests..fasting for a good part of the day but then eating during an 8 hour period... 16 hour fast and Dr. Michael Mosley from the Uk suggest a 500 calorie breakfast and fasting the rest of the day for 2 days every week. Dr. Joel Furhman Eat to Live...suggest there are two stages of eating the anabolic where like filling up a car with gas or eating to energize and the catabolic where you drive or your body does it things and during the catabolic stage the body heals itself or detoxifies.
Some say if you are eating all the time the body doesn't have a chance to lose weight.
I'm not saying you're pro, but you said you found reputable sites endorsing it, and in my experience they don't, so I wondered what you considered 'reputable'.
Livestrong and Web MD are pretty good resources! :)
The Web MD article does state it's not any good for weight loss, and in its article does at least reference published journals on fasting and insulin.
The Livestrong one though, appears to be no more than a review of some books about fasting. While I'd generally recommend Livestrong as a good resource, I'm not particularly pleased with that one article. It doesn't state anything like "we checked out the advice in these books in this journal and those studies and it all checks out and is sound" it just repeats what the book says. So this is no more an endorsement than the book itself, and you can probaby find hundreds of books saying fasting is the answer to weight loss - just as there are books saying juicing is, or HGH is, or eating these particular food combinations is, or not focusing on food at all is, etc etc.
Basically, it doesn't appear you've found much more than what I did - that it's not generally well advised in health circles to fast for weight loss. It doesn't appear to work.
I notice, and think it's telling, that the original poster has not yet come back with a reputable healthy living website that endorses fasting...

I agree-fast really does diminish carb cravings. It helps to feel what the real hunger really is and how different "I'm hungry" feels from just " I want to eat".

I semi-fast for a day or two ocassionally to help me get back on track when I have strayed from my healthy habits. I use it similar to a religious fast, only there is no god involved. It helps me to focus on my relationship with food, reminds me that I don't need it constantly, and diminishes my carb cravings by "turning down" my insulin production.
My periodic, brief fasts are "time outs" that give me a chance to regroup.

I fast about three times a year because of my religion. I also fast when I have an upset stomach-a quickest fix ever.

I'm not into fasting. My blood sugar would drop so low that I probably would pass out. LOL!
I think you've gotten some great responses. I think it's fine to fast for religious reasons, but there's really no reason to do it otherwise. It's not going to help with weight loss, or provide overall health benefits.
Putting aside any health risks or affects on your weight loss/gain, fasting is not something that someone who has to accomplish anything can do for more than a few hours here or there. Do you work? If so, you'll lose focus and concentration. Do you exercise or run errands during the day? If so, you won't have the energy to do them effectively. There are always people who aren't big eaters or can just go longer without food, but most people need a regular intake of at least some protein, carbs, or vegetables to just be an effective member of society. Try fasting for one day and see how difficult it makes everyday life.

It comes down to doing what's best for you. I personally would want to kill people if I only ate once a day or once every couple days. But, my cousin, who is very fit and has always been into health and fitness, eats once per day, at dinner, and he seems to like how it's working for him and his goals. I would say if you're going to do it for weight loss/health (not religious reasons), you gotta go all in.. not just every now and then. Constantly switching eating habits wreaks havoc on your body, in my uneducated opinion.

You will probably always get people arguing on both sides of the issue. I have done lots of complete fasting in the past and loved it. Colors were brighter, sleep was better, waking up was easier, and I had tons of energy and more time in my day.
Now I try it and my blood sugar crashes and I don't feel those benefits anymore. So who knows? My personal feeling is that some kinds of fasting is good, but everyone is different!
I've read a little bit about it, and I'm intrigued. But then, there's basically two camps; people who are totally for fasting, think it's amazing, and people who are like NO! Both camps seem to come from legit websites.
So now I'm confused. Is it a great thing to do, every now again? Or does it wreck havoc and is unnecessary? Opinions?
