Eat Stop Eat is an intermittent fasting lifestyle that recommends fasting 1-2 nonconsecutive days a week, along with 3x per week resistance training to preserve lean mass. There are other intermittent fasting schedules out there, but I find this one best suited to my life.

Thank you for everyone's input. Coach Tanya's article is a must-read for anybody tempted to do this! It doesn't look like a good idea at all...
I agree with people that it would be better to stay at the lower limit of a healthy calorie range for several days than it would be to fast for one day.
It is so great to have the support of all you people instead of giving in to temptations like this one!
All that would do for me is cause me to be a right cranky bitch all day and binge the next, most likely. I'm not sure really why it would help, because I would imagine you're likely to eat near the very op, if not slightly over, your calorie range for the next 2 or 3 days as your body tries to "catch up". Or, you'd be really hungry all the time. At least I think that's how it'd be for me. I'd rather eat near the bottom of my limit for two or three days than fast for one.
I've fasted for religious reasons in the past. 3 weeks with just juice so not a total fast. The first couple of days are really hard but the hunger pains do go away. I lost about 15 pounds but gained it all back as soon as the fast was over. I don't recommend them to any one except in a religious context and I agree, talk to your doctor first.

There is scientific evidence that caloric restriction with optimal nutrition (CRON) extends the life span of the species. This is not the type of caloric restriction we know of here in Sparkpeople, but it is 10% to 30% more severe.
The people who practice CRON have two options: (1) restrict the caloric intake every day to the desired value, (2) fast ever other day and eat regular calories every other day so that the overall effect is consuming the same weekly calories as if calorie restricting every day.
I don't practice it (if I were to practice it, I would not be overweight as I am now), but I had interest in life extension and all that research, and I am a member of the Caloric Restriction Society, just google for it. They have a nice web site and everything.
I would rather cut back on a day's worth of calories over the course of a week rather than go one whole day without eating anything. I don't think its going to jump start weight loss just by fasting for a day, and as the others said it will probably do your body more harm than good.

For weight loss, no, you should avoid it. If you want to do it for religious/spiritual reasons then you should probably get the ok from a doctor.
If you're interested in fasting for weight loss it will probably do more harm than good, as you might not be able to keep your hunger under control and might binge once you can eat again. Plus, you run the risk of messing up your blood sugar levels and passing out, getting a migraine, becoming dizzy. It's best to just lower your daily calorie amount than fasting for one day so that you can eat those calories during the other 6 days.
I had a male coworker in college who did this, but it wasn't once a week it was once a month. He was from Kenya and it was a tradition where he came from. He believed it did the body good because it cleaned it out. He was healthy and did it for other reasons than weight loss. In most cases fasting require you to eat NO food for 24hrs and only drink water. If you do think you want to do this, I highly recommend seeing a doctor first. Keep in mind my coworker had been doing it since he was very young. For someone who hasn't done it before it could be a huge shock on the body and could be unhealthy.
I don't know anyone who has had any success with this. People I know who have tried it say that they just can't control their eating the next day or even two, and they also half-consciously eat more the day before. In the end they more than make up for the day's calories, and also spend a day every week feeling cranky and distracted.

I think it is only good to fast for religious reasons or if you have a medical procedure that requires fasting.
Fasting for weight loss is not a good idea. Personally when I fast it stalls weight loss.

I have heard of diets or health programs that talk about fasting (giving up food) for one day a week. They suggest eating maybe an apple that day and drinking as much water as you want. Some people also do this for religious reasons.
What do you think of this? It sounds tempting to avoid a day's worth of calories each week, but wouldn't it put the body into starvation mode?
