DieticianBecky - That's a good idea. I need to get better about finding my way around the kitchen on the weekends. Maybe get another crock pot, make one for dinner that way and another cooking something for the week at work.

How do you feel about leftovers??

Making a pot of chili, soup, stew, crockpot meal on a Sunday can provide several quick re-heat meals for the week.

How comfortable are you with the amount of calories you are eating? Do you feel deprived? If you do, you might want to eat a little more non-processed foods. When we start to feel deprived, that is when we start slipping.

Dietician Becky- thanks for reviewing that for me. I know i need to cut back on the fast food and do more cooking, but it gets hard being a divorced dad who's kids have lots of activities. I am trying hard to work in the veggies and fruits and getting a little better this week than last. I guess I was just trying to learn what to watch for since. The 39 pounds I have lost have been since December 26th.

@SlimmerKiwi: I don't usually get hungry much...except for a couple of hours in mid-afternoon. This doesn't happen all the time for me. I eat breakfast between 8:30-9:00 am, which usually carries me over to lunch or early afternoon snack. I eat dinner between 6:00 pm-7:00 pm and that will usually carry me over through the night. I reserve a serving of fruit for an hour or so before bedtime (I usually go to bed at midnight). Of course, some days are rougher than others, but as long as I'm not overly tempted (say, by smelling foods cooking or watching a bunch of fast food ads on TV...LOL), I do pretty well. I am surprised that I've not had a really tough time staying on my low-calorie regimen. emoticon


@SEAGIRL545: I've never really followed the rule of 1-2% of body weight per week loss. For me, that is too slow. At my beginning size, it would take me years to lose all the weight I need to lose. And my obesity has caused me health problems, mainly concerning my legs. Having to wait for several years to lose the proper amount of weight would only be stringing out my health problems...causing me more stress, worry, and medical bills. As long as I don't have any problems with losing weight quickly, I will continue to do so. Eventually my weight loss will slow down as I approach my goal weight. At that time, I will slowly increase my daily calorie consumption and begin a gradual process of maintenance to ensure that I don't start gaining weight again. By that time though, I should feel much more energetic and I'll be able to do more activity and be less sedentary...all helpful for me.


@NAUSIKAA: I've never had gall bladder issues, although I've had kidney stones in the past. At my next doctor's visit, I will ask him about the gall bladder and see if a routine ultrasound could be performed on it, just to make sure everything is okay with it. I hadn't realized that I could potentially have gall bladder issues. Thank you for that tip!


@DIETICIANBECKY: Thank you for the information. It is appreciated and gives me something to think about for sure. And I will continue to have my doctor monitor me as I lose weight.

Yes, for people following a general weight loss plan, 1-2 pounds lost weekly ( or about 1% of total body weight) is the goal.

However, for some who are at an obese/morbidly obese status regarding BMI, a faster weight loss is needed and with medical monitoring (regular visits to one's doctor), this can be safe and appropriate.

Gallbladder disease is a risk with being overweight and obese. There can be increased problems with weight loss as well----which is why it is important to still have dietary fat included in one's diet daily---thus being in one's SP fat range. This should also be monitored by one's doctor.

ZENANDNOW - if you still have your gall bladder, PLEASE store away this bit of information in your mind: rapid weight loss leads to gall stones / gall bladder disease in many people. It did for me (I lost 45 lbs in 90 days, not as fast as you but still fast). Because I didn't have the "standard symptoms" (pain), the doctors completely missed it until I almost DIED. (Yes, it can kill you if it ruptures.) Please please just remember this so that if you start to feel weird (nausea, pain, dizziness, heart arrhythmia, heart palpitations, bowel changes, etc) get an ultrasound on your upper right quadrant to check for gall stones. If I had known this I would have been spared FOUR YEARS of constant nausea (since they didn't think of gall bladder disease, I ended up diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder just to explain the nausea.)

I always thought that the "rule of thumb" was 1-2% of your body weight per week, which for most people would fall between 1-2 pounds. But for someone who weighs 400 pounds, that would be 4-8 pounds. It seems like you've lost about 20 pounds a month, which is just slightly over that percentage.

ZENANDNOW - you are doing really well with your weight-loss - congratulations.

I'm curious, tho'! I had a little peek at your SparkPage and Nutrition Tracker - don't you get real hungry on such a low calorie diet? Most days were only around 1100 cal's and some under.

For someone who has a greater amount to lose, a faster weight loss "can be" safe, appropriate and the best approach to take. To keep it safe for the individual---check in with your doctor (as you are doing). The doctor will say how often he/she wants to see you---something like (every 20 pounds lost, etc).

Many folks who have a greater amount to lose, have increased risks for certain diseases and are often on more medications. As the weight rapidly is lost---medication adjustments are vitally important.

So my advice---see your doctor.

@DieticianBecky....I began my weight-loss regimen on 11-1-12 and as of March 1, 2013 I've lost 86-pounds. Of course, I am quite obese (less so now), and I know that fatter people, primarily guys, will lose more weight in a month than others who are much less obese. My first two months, I lost 30-pounds each month. I am still losing about 12-pounds each month...though I'll see what March hold in store for me.

I know that eventually my monthly weight-loss will slow down dramatically. I feel fine right now, and my family doctor doesn't seem to have any problems with my rapid weight loss either. I take additional supplements and vitamins to compensate for the nutrients that I'm not getting with my low daily calorie restrictions.

I would appreciate your opinion on this matter.

Your ticker is showing that you have lost about 40 pounds; but in how many weeks??

I looked at your nutrition tracker and you are taking in about 1700-2000 calories on most days. You are using many fast foods, processed foods, etc. For your first step, I would suggest that you try to get in a few more fruit and veggie servings daily.

As you progress, your weight loss will slow--you may find that you need to used lower calorie meals, entrees, etc too. For that evening meal you may want to start using grilled chicken and fish, fruits, veggies, salads, etc.

The more we have to lose, the faster it tends to come off at first.

You will very likely find that the size of your weekly losses tapers off after a few weeks. As long as you are sticking to your suggested ranges, you ought to be doing fine nutrition-wise. Most people find that their average-over-the-long-term ends up falling within the prescribed 1-2#/week loss by the time they reach "goal weight."

This seems like a dumb question, but I have been really losing weight fast. Not a bad thing on the face of it, but I am concerned. I am sticking to the recommended calories and working out. When I run the nutrition report it looks like I am getting enough of the nutrients. But the weight is coming off fast. I know this can be bad thing but I am feeling good overall. Not feeling like I am missing anything. I guess my question is, what should I look for that would give me a clue if I am losing too fast?
