Personally, I don't see any food as "bad". Some things are not as "healthy" a choice as others, but in the grand scheme of an entire lifetime of eating, one fried chicken meal or chicken with egg and breadcrumbs, is not that big a deal. I don't see anything wrong with a few tater tots, unless you're planning on eating them more than just every once in a while.
I'm the only one who EVER cooks anything around here, and there are days where I'm tired or don't feel well or come in so ravenous-- I would be thrilled if ANYONE else cooked something. The thing is, that you can always microwave a bunch of vegetables and then eat just a small portion of the entree, scraping off the breading or whatever. Chicken breasts are a really good source of low-fat protein, you'd just want to minimize the "extra" added to them from someone else's cooking. Just do the best you can with it, and go on.
I would down a lg salad before your main course. Then half of a chicken breast, and do not eat the skin or breading with some wild rice and steamed vegies. If you cant get the breading off then eat a little less rice and more vegies. My hubby has to eat so many calories just to keep weight that I have gotten used to making these type of alterations to food.
It is hard when someone else prepares your food. I usually cook all the meals and last week someone else cooked for me, I had to eat little servings and loaded up on veggies. My family all know that I am eating healthier foods now. Maybe if you tell everyone that you are trying to eat healthier, they will try to help out when they cook.
I had the same dilemma tonight. My dad made dinner - which was fried chicken. It didn't have a bunch of breading on it and I didn't eat the skin, but I did eat it because 1) he cooked 2) I had just come home from a Spinning class and was really hungry 3) I needed to eat protein and 4) I have been getting over a cold and didn't feel very well. I knew what I was eating when I ate it but after I finished eating fried chicken, a huge salad and a several tater tots (which I never eat), I started to feel guilty and bad. I didn't go over my daily recommended caloric range, but I ate most of my calories for the day at dinner, which I avoid doing. And then I started to think of all the fat and grease and was imagining it all ruining my spinning work out......then the mind started to run negative self talk about how I should have come in and just made my own dinner....etc. So now I'm trying to have it be ok that I ate what I ate, because I didn't overeat and I don't usually eat things like that anyway (other than the salad). Trying not to feel bad about it. ......

Have you plugged in the ingredients into the SparkRecipe site to determine the nutritional value of the chicken. More times than not, the food is not so much the problem as the portion size we eat. If you add in some nice veggies and a salad, you can probably still work this into your meal plan.
Remember too, that healthy living habits take time to develop and for our loved ones who mean well too. So maybe sitting down with your Grandmother and explaining to her your intentions may help her have an idea of how to prepare the recipes you would like to try.
I came home tonight expecting to make dinner for my family. I had everything planned out. When I came home, the chicken breasts I was going to cut up and use for a Hungry Girl recipe were in the oven covered in bread crumbs sticking on with an egg with the yoke kept it. I love my grandmother for trying to make food for me, but she has no idea how those calories can add up. I don't know what to do. I am struggling so much with trying to figure out how to eat healthier. I feel so sick right now.
