You said that you felt you had to finish your run early so someone else could use the machine. I would never end my workout early for that reason as it's 1st come 1st serve. Just my thinking so if the machines are busy when you go in trying doing something else like stretching, warming up on the bike, or whatever you chose.

If I workout too late at night I am unable to fall asleep for hours. Three nights a week I play tennis from 5:00-7:30 pm and it is a hard and intense workout. Even then there can be nights where I find myself still too pumped up to sleep before midnight. But everyone is different, so try it out and see how your body responds. I am someone who is energized by exercise so I love to do cardio/strength workouts in the am on the other days.
Pm exercise is trial and error (: I do my intense in the am and my yoga/step/Pilates/ or on the ball at night before bed in my home. I'm all too familiar with the gym routine, so I'll add that I don't feel like I need to finish early. It took a bit for me, but I came to a point where I felt like I pay the same as everyone else, I waited, and this is my time. I'd also suggest if you are waiting, get some strength in , maybe hop on an elliptical. If all comes down to the option that leaves you with the best workout experience and as little stress or anxiety possible

Maybe this isn't right, but I exercise whenever I can, and sometimes late at night to get it in for the day!

Strenuous exercise may make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Why don't you try it out for a couple of days and see how it goes?

I am late evening exerciser and have no problem going to sleep. I usually start between 9 and 10 PM. I finished by 11, take a shower and I can go to sleep within minutes of turning out the light. I run on the treadmill and am very tired when I finish. It works for me, it does not work for everyone. Good Luck, I have had that gym problem before; therefore I invested in my own equipment.
Some people have difficulty getting to sleep while their body is still wound up from working out. Others have no problems. Perhaps try it and see how you go. 4-5 hours is probably enough to wind down, 2-3 hours may be more of an issue.
If you do find you have some difficulty sleeping after a later workout, there are still options: * plan a shorter, faster run that day (or use the incline) - higher intensity workouts offere additional health and fitness advantages anyway. * take the opportunity to cross train with a different machine (eg. bike, elliptical) rather than waiting for a treadmill to become available.
Gentle yoga or something of that sort would be fine but with your schedule I would be afraid that something vigorous like running would get my adrenaline up and keep me awake. My husband can fall asleep in a flash but for me it would be an issue. You know yourself more than likely but if you aren't sure, experiment.

I have established a pretty consistent workout regimen that I am almost 100% happy with - the only issue I am finding revolves around Tuesday evenings. By the time I am able to get to the gym to run it is between 6:00-6:30pm and the place is packed! I'm hoping once daylight savings begins again I can just run outside, but for now it is too dark for that. When I go to the gym at this time I find myself either waiting for a treadmill or feeling like I have to finish up with my run early so someone else can have a turn. Would it be a bad idea to run later these evenings, around 8:00pm? I typically go to bed between 10-11pm and have to get up for work at 5:30 the next morning. Never been a night time exerciser so I would appreciate any input anyone out there can offer!
