I agree with the previous posters that you should either revisit your doctor, or find a new one. Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, so you shouldn't just try to push through it. If your doc's recommendations aren't working, it sounds like it's time to look for other alternatives.

Before doing any more exercises, II would be pushing your Dr for further investigations. I have arthritis of the spine and scoliosis. Both were diagnosed after investigations including x-rays, for significant back and hip pain. It really DOES pay to know exactly what it is, because one exercise that might be marvelous for the arthritis, isn't necessarily so crash hot for the scoliosis. Either/or (conditions) has also often triggered sciatica pain.
As far as bike riding is concerned, it works well for a lot of people, but considerably aggravated my condition. I guess it is a case of if it aggravates it, then find something else. I get the bulk of my walks inside my own home, on the carpet. I put my groceries and laundry away one at a time. The beauty of this is when/if fatigue and/or pain sets in, I can sit without having to walk back home first. Also, it is even ground, and on carpet flooring so it takes a lot of the jolting and jarring out of the exercise. Make sure that you take a good look at your shoes, too! A lot of people don't wear good footwear and this can cause significant back and hip pain. Make sure that your shoes fit properly (sounds silly but a lot of people don't wear a correct fit) and that it has good arch supports. I found that changing shoes improved the pain somewhat. It might be that if there is a specialty sports shoe store around you they will be able to fit you according to computerized results of your gait, etc.
Re exercises, there are some great chair, upper body exercises that you should be able to do. I will point out, too, that I don't do anywhere near the amount of exercise that is normally recommended, because of my health issues, but it hasn't stopped me from losing a considerable amount of weight. Most of it comes down to nutrition.

If it were me... 1) I'd get a Second Opinion from another Doctor!! 2) ask for a referral to a Physical Therapist!!
I'd definitely skip the TaeBo for now; walking would be the most I'd consider.
Remember that weight loss is primarily going to come from what you are eating....not the exercise!! Focus on your calorie limits and eating healthy.....

I don't know exactly what is wrong but my lower left back and upper thigh/leg are always in so much pain. The last doctor I saw said its "Just" muskulo-skeletal pain and doesn't think its anything serious. He gave me stretches to do to help but it never goes away. I was doing tae-bo for exercise but my thigh/hip area hurts so bad I can barely even move my legs normally. I am always hobbling and limping around. I don't know what else I can do for exercise. Is walking enough? Or do you think bike riding will put less pressure on that part of my body? I need help. The doctor basically told me not to come back anymore for it but it hurts so bad and all the exercises/stretches are not helping.
