RPM is "revolutions" and would count the left footpad moving in an entire circle. SPM is "strides" and I'm imagining that would count left-down = 1, right-down = 2.

That would mean 90 RPM is 180SPM, right where you want to be.

I'm not sure about suggested RPM for elliptical in particular, but for both running and cycling the optimal cadence is 90. That's a 90RPM, not 90SPM.

So I'd say you're already doing it ideally!

Well here is another question, what is people's average RPM on the elliptical when they are getting a good workout? so i can kind of compare where I am at..

I believe September actually, I am not all caught up on my magazines! It was the lose 8 pounds at the gym program, it listed a workout to do on several different machines. Thank you so much for looking into this!

What issue did you get that from? I am looking at the October issue and did not see what you mentioned.

Hmm, my elliptical uses RPMs...even if it was a running mimicking elliptical that still sounds high. Let me see what I can find out.

I was reading self magazine yesterday and it had an intervel workout set for the elliptical. It was based on Strides Per Minute and were around 160-190 My elliptical says RPMs and even when I'm working hard I'm only hitting around 90! I hope there is a big difference between SPM and RPM or am i just that out of shape? I'm very confused, I tried to google the terms but did not find much help.
