You cut out wheat, etc for 5 months... if you're having sensitivity issues, that may not be a long enough trial. And now you've increased (?) rice and whole grains, which pretty much negates any benefit you may have seen by cutting out the processed wheat - because whole grains still are grains. And if you're sensitive, rice may also be cross-reactive with wheat sensitivity. And you've cut out red meats... which aren't necessarily unhealthy if incorporated into your total protein profile.

"Leaky gut" is a condition in which your intestinal absorption pathways are damaged and disrupted by some foods. The tricky thing about it is that the symptoms aren't necessarily gastrointestinal. They can be systemic. I've changed my diet, and been on this plan for a couple years, and it's only just now resolving to the point I'm able to see improvements.

Beans are still troublesome for me. I have to go to great lengths to prepare them (see post below) and then only eat them occasionally and in moderation. My GI symptoms are under control now, except when I "fall" to excessive carbs (including beans). Then it's right back to the dysmotility or stasis and bloating that invariably comes behind it.

If you're having gut symptoms, it seems pretty likely there's some sort of dietary trigger. Google leaky gut. You may also be sensitive to certain food groups - check out FODMAPs and nightshades. Some people can't tolerate things in those groups.

Diet is a very individual and variable part of health. We all have to find out what's healthy for *us*. It can be a long study! Hope you find the right path for you.

The only way I can eat beans is if they are properly prepared. Soaked overnight for 12 hours, drained, rinsed well, boiled for 1 hour, rinsed well and then used. I do this for my homemade baked beans which after they are boiled and rinsed are slow cooked for 8 hours. They are the only beans I can tolerate without getting bloated and gassy.

Red meat is high in iron, which a lot of menstruating women are low in. You might want to think about including this in your diet a few times a week.

You might try adding a probiotic to your daily routine - sounds like maybe your gut bacteria is low and that can lead to leaky gut syndrome. I personally use Garden of Life Raw probiotics - I think they are a pretty phenomenal product.

What kinds of food are you eating? If you are eating processed foods, this might be part of your issue. Processed foods are not food, they are food like products. Take a look at the ingredients and see how much of it is real food. A lot of those "diet" foods out there or "quick" foods are not good for you.

If you don't, try cooking all your food. It's cheaper and you control what you put in it. It's hard to go completely processed food free but you will be eating better and feeling better.

Your body is made to eat real food. It doesn't know how to process the crap they put in food these days.

I have found that I have a stomach sensitivity to raw carrots - not sure why. I have had to cut them out. But I would say that if you are eating a large amount of fruits and veggies, you may want to make sure the majority if not all of them are organic. You might be sensitive to the pesticides used on one or more of them.

as others have mentioned, especially if you've introduced beans and such into your menu, which were not there before, it could be a reaction to that type of food.

Sugar free food can cause bloat and stomach upset...if you are eating anything sugar free or with words that end in itol or ose.....get rid of them from your daily diet.....

Sugar also causes bloat...check your labels.....

Too much sodium and not enough water intake...Yes, drink water but other sources like fruits and veggies count too! Some fruits and veggies can hydrate you just as well as water. They also can act as a natural diuretic....try spinach, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries and tangerines......grapefruit , carrots, Asparagus, tomatoes, zucchini, radishes, romaine, cucumber, parsley.. high water foods....

to reduce bloat...Avoid large meals....reduce sodium intake....drink water...Incorporate protein in every meal...Don't overdo it on fiber...leave sugar–free candy and gum, diet drinks and other foods that contain sugar alcohols off the menu.

If this does not help please see your doctor for individual advice.....

I frequently feel worse now then I did when I ate whatever I wanted. But I was younger then, and all systems worked better then. If I eat exactly the way I "should" I feel great.

Well I'm not sure what leaky gut means, but I tend to bloat after eating carbs like rice, beans. I eat canned beans and they're high in sodium - so I will cut back on beans and see if it helps (sodium causes water retention = bloating). does this make sense?

@Anarie I changed my diet to lose a few vanity pounds and be healthier. I don't have a full-time job yet so that's why I don't have insurance, but it's ok. I've never used medicines before for pain or birth control etc and IMO the best preventative medicine is eating well, not pills.

What I don't understand is why, after changing my diet from like 80% healthy to almost 100% healthy I feel worse? I felt better before, though I'm slimmer now. Everyone I know who embraces a "healthy lifestyle" says they feel more energetic.

Why did you change? Think back; what was it that made you decide you needed to eat healthier? What *other* changes did you make in your life at the same time? What was going on around you?

Most people don't change just one thing, for no particular reason. Generally, if we're going to make a change in diet, we do it when we move, when we change jobs, when we kick out that louse of a boyfriend, when we fall in love with the one who is NOT a louse and start thinking about babies, when we join a new gym, when we see a loved one go through an illness, etc, etc, etc. There's almost always some trigger for a change. That trigger can also be responsible for a change in how we feel-- if you changed jobs and diet at the same time, there's probably some job stress, for example. The trigger also might have triggered other changes-- for example, if you changed your eating when you kicked your ex to the curb, you might also go on or off of birth control, or change the dose.

It's almost never just one thing.

Also, in a week you'll be able to get health insurance. If you sign up, you'll get at least one free well-woman check-up/office visit, and also the basic preventive medicine tests like a Pap smear. I would really recommend taking advantage of that; in most states, you'll get tax credits that will make the insurance very inexpensive, and even if you live in a Medicaid refusenik state like I do, the first year will pay for itself by letting you get caught up on all the basics you've been skipping. You'll get things covered that, if you did them out-of-pocket, would cost more than the insurance will for the first year. If the bloating is being caused by cysts or polyps or something, your covered check-ups will catch that. You say you never get sick, but you don't feel well. That's kind of the same as being sick. If you're feeling poorly when you eat well, then you really do need to see a doctor.

I'm 5'4" 116. According to an online calorie calculator, that means I eat 1800 cals/day which is plenty. But I'm not sure how to count the #calories/carbs in my food?

No allergies either. I don't have health insurance right now so I haven't been to the Dr. in a while but that's ok since I never get sick and to be honest, I find most docs are clueless about health/nutrition stuff. I know my vitamin and iron levels are pretty good.

You said you don't eat many carbs. Are you eating too few? Track it and check. Carbs are the body's fuel.

Also, how many calories per day do you typically eat? If I get in the habit of eating too few calories, I start to feel weak and sluggish.

You could also have your doctor run an allergy test on you to make sure that you aren't allergic to any foods.

I drink 5-6 glasses of water a day. When I tried drinking 8+ I would just have to pee a lot and even with 5-6 glasses I feel hydrated and my urine is clear (sorry if this is TMI lol) so I don't see the point in drinking more?

Another weird issue I have is when I drink a lot of water (8-10 glasses) I get headaches. My Dr. said it was due to caffeine withdrawal but I doubt it because the only caffeine I drink is a cup of green tea every day, for several years, that hasn't changed.

Interesting - I did try going on a wheat-free diet earlier this year to see if I was sensitive to gluten and I noticed no difference, so I have been eating gluten again for months.

I do eat plenty of fat in the form of eggs, nuts, olive oil/coconut oil. I eat very little wheat, my carbs come mostly from rice, fruits, and beans. I will try cutting out beans/peas and see if that helps. I hope it's not the problem because I love beans, I put them in salads.

It can take some time for your body to adjust to a change like that, especially if you have a big increase in fiber. I'd suggest, if you are not already, tracking what you are eating and seeing what you see. If you have a high fiber (over 45g per day) and a low fat diet, that would explain a lot of your digestive distress. Even though I eat over 30g of fiber every day, if I go over 45g (which is easy if I use lentils, lots of beans, or whole wheat pasta for my meals), I become bloated, have terrible gas and stomach problems for a day or two afterwards.

One last thing- Make sure you are drinking lots of water. It sounds like you are already, but track for a while and make sure you are getting 8-10 glasses a day.

If none of that helps or seems to be the problem, I would suggest booking an appointment with your doctor. It could be none of this is related to diet at all and is just a coincidence that it happened around the same time.

You may be sensitive to some of the fiber rich products you are eating. Try not eating lentils for a week, if that does not make a difference then try not eating whole wheat, experiment with different foods and you should find the one that is causing you problems.

Hi, I'm a 23 yr old female, fairly active, always been a healthy weight. I decided to eat a healthier diet thinking I would have more energy and feel better.

I cut out: white flour, red meat, junk food (cookies, ice cream etc), soda
I eat: fruits, vegetables, lentils, nuts, seeds, rice, whole grains, fish, eggs, poultry
I drink: mostly water, sometimes tea

I have been eating like this for 5 months and feel worse (bloated, less energy, stomach hurts sometimes). All of these issues are minor, but I don't understand how I could be eating healthier and feeling worse? No food allergies/intolerance either.

I did lose 6 lbs (122 lbs to 116 lbs) so I just got a bit slimmer without feeling better.
