Losing weight is difficult for everyone, but I have to agree with the general opinion that it is more difficult for women. My guess is it's partly because men are built more muscularly, partly because women are built to store nutrients for childbearing, but that's just a guess. My wife and I are both on a weight loss odyssey and she is very openly jealous of the fact that I am losing much more quickly than she. I eat sweets, she doesn't, and I lose much faster. Not really fair. My mother struggled her whole life to lose weight and constantly lost heart because of the slow results. It's hard to fight nature.

Welcome to Spark People ! I hope the Spark dudes don't mind a Spark gal dropping in on their forum.
It's true. Losing weight isn't easy for any of us. However, men do have a slight genetic (evolutionary advantage) over women. Men have a higher percentage of lean muscle that women. In general, men carry 40% lean muscle and women carry about 27% lean muscle. Having a higher amount of lean muscle means your bodies are more efficient at burning fat than women. Because women carry more body fat, it puts us behind the 8 ball when it comes to losing.
So, initially, men will see a quicker weight loss than women. BUT, long term, the playing field levels out. When it comes to gaining or losing weight, what matters most is what we eat. good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit. In short, you can't outrun a bad diet with exercise. That's a trap too many of us feel into over the years. Figured that as long as we exercise, we could eat whatever we wanted. Well, that was a misconception. We can't eat what we want. If we want to lose weight and keep it off, we do need to be mindful of what we eat and how much.
But.. on a final note, because of that 40% lean muscle, if you have a good strength training program, you will notice the inches drop off faster than scale weight.
I've heard that before and it ticks me off.. it's not easy for ANYBODY to lose.. It's all determination, motivation and will! You have to change your life.... and that's not easy for anybody.. period. That being said.. once you finally DO get started it gets much easier and as the pounds come off you get even MORE motivation.. but I think that's true of man or woman.

Congrats on your progress. Don't let people be jealous maybe men do lose weight faster, but hard work is hard work.
My wife says the same thing, though - she's scared to try to lose weight with me because she feels like every milestone I reach is competition for her. I have no intention of competing with her. Now her sister is dropping pounds, and my wife's afraid that her sister will bem ore competition she doesn't want.
But this is the same woman who just accomplished something she thought was impossible for her - she learned how to wear contact lenses. I know that, if she can do that, she can learn to take better care of herself.
I want to be her teammate, not her competitor. I hope there are other guys here who have been in the same spot and can help.

Maybe we men are just more determined and try harder, but I don't believe it is any easier even if we do lose it faster.
I haven't experienced the comments that it's easier for guys to lose. When dw and I were in a local biggest loser competition, we both put forth a huge effort and lost about the same % body weight so that doesn't lend credence to the statement.

I have lost about 25 pounds on my way to 50 hopefully. Invariably when people comment on my weight loss, particularly if it is a woman, it is followed with, "well it's easier for guys to lose weight."
Funny thing is that it hasn't felt easy . . . every good decision is a battle (especially right now for some reason), and the progress which starts quick slows down to a bare crawl.
