I can't usually eat before my work out or I get nauseated, but I poach some eggs afterwards (obviously cholesterol isn't one of my worries). It is really fast to do, gives you protein to build muscles, and makes me feel less wiped.
I work out early in the morning and I don't eat beforehand. I asked my doctor if this was harming me. The answer was, if you don't feel weak during your workout and you don't want to eat first, that's fine, just make sure you eat afterwards.

When I got up at 4:30 a.m. which is most every day now, I dig out three prunes from one bag and about 28-30 grams of dried apricots first thing before I log onto SPARKPEOPLE and get my points and then get on my stationary bike and pedal away for 30 minutes following that I pick up my two kettlebells and work with them for 15 minutes and then back on the bike for 15 more minutes. I have two 8-ounce glasses of water during that time too. This works for me and it has for some time. WooHoo!

I'm one of those people who needs to eat something before my workout. Nothing heavy i.e. granola bar, flatbread with peanut butter and some juice. If I don't, I find myself heading towards a sugar crash and I feel like I'm going to pass out or nausea. That being said, my workouts are usually intense and involve interval training.

Thanks for the post and congratulations on your success! I am just starting the South Beach Diet supercharged and a trainer for workouts. I workout in the morning and struggle with what to eat (food is not appealing to me in the morning). I will try your method.

I am diabetic type 2. Also Hypothyroid. Since coming off my medication, I am able to exercise early morning when I get up before I have breakfast. Its helping me to lose weight again. My diabetic nurse said I would have to go back on the meds if I don't lose weight. As I put on 14lbs last year. I have lost 4lbs since returning to exercise before breakfast, but its a slow process and i hope it will stay off this time. I have lots more energy through the day now and I sleep better at night. When i first started with spark and was losing weight each week, I was exercising before breakfast, but I was on medication then. This really works for me! I have to say, I do not do weight training or kettlebell on an empty stomach. I make sure i have good protein and carbohydrate first. I run and walk after breakfast, which is varied. Muesli with skim milk and 1% milky drink after, fruit juice and an orange. Today I had wholemeal bread with half an Avocado, Mozzarella , pesto and EVOO. It really fills me up but i am ready for weight lifting, running, or dancing. My GD is coming so I need the fat to make my hormones work and the carbs and protein to keep me going.

I go for a 30 - 45 minutes walk before breakfast, which is fine, but I don't know if I could manage a big workout without food first.

I usually don't eat before early morning workouts at the gym, but I have a caffeine pill and then my pre-workout drink. During the workout I drink some more water and immediately afterwards I have a recovery drink. Then, at home, I'll have a proper meal.

I read once somewhere that you should plan to eat 1-2 hours before working out.
If the first meal of the day is possible to have before the workout in the morning without interrupting your sleep cycle (meaning, don't wake up early just to eat) then eat. If not, plan to eat a good breakfast right after exercise.
Personally I NEED to eat to wake my body up but I am so not a morning person haha.

I work out around 6am (usually either an hour boot camp class or a 3-5 mile run) and don't eat beforehand. I love my sleep, so I don't get up until about 5:45, and I can't eat that soon before a workout.
I always eat before I workout at the gym later in the day, but when I'm doing an exercise video at home I just have my coffee first then have a shower then breakfast (oatmeal) after.

I have read and heard from multiple fit friends and trainers that you should eat 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking. This does not work for me when I work out in the morning, which is my preferred time (then I can't come up with an excuse later!) I have started having a small shake with about 10g of protein within 20 minutes of getting up then go work out. Then I have another shake with about 20g of protein within 30 minutes of my workout. I have found that if I eat "real food", other than a small shake I feel sick during my workout and a large shake before is just too much. I have only started this in the past two weeks but it seems to be working for me. I use a vegan protein mix and coconut and/or almond milk as I am sensitive to whey protein and dairy in general.
Really, the best advise is to learn to listen to YOUR body!

I have to eat something with my grueling workouts, because if I don!t I get sick and weak. I don!t eat a large meal, just some protein, and carbs, This morning was 6oz greek yogurt, medium banana and 4 cups 1/2 def coffee. I work out at 4:30 am 5 days a week. Unless I am absolutely starving or feeling weak, I don't eat. I prefer to eat a bit later so I'm not snacking as much after breakfast. If I do eat before hand, it's probably some peanut butter toast or a banana or maybe a protein shake, but, honestly, I can't remember the last time I ate before my morning workout.

I have a cup of coffee and a glass of water preworkout. I don't know if it's the best plan, but it gets me going.
i'm not huge for eating first thing in the morning at all. so i tend to have a clif gel block or two before i run if i am going before work [if i am not going right to work i have time to have my normal half bagel and cheese and wait and run]. but that's only because not eating leaves me dragging during my run and wanting to inhale anything not nailed down when i get back. and if i eat actual food i want to puke by about the mile mark. so it's enough quick energy to get me through my run.

I workout first thing, it won't get done if I don't do it right away, and I struggle with eating anything before I workout.
