That's excellent news. The only other thing I could think of that hasn't been mentioned is whether you've been checked for PCOS. (The B12 issue alone could hypothetically cause many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism due to resultant anemia -- though I don't know if you're anemic. And PCOS can make it hard to lose weight.)
And just in general, when you're in a rut and going nowhere, changing up your routine seems to help a lot of people. I've seen so many comments and they're all different: increased exercise, decreased exercise, change type of exercise, added calories, reduced calories, went low carb, went high protein, stopped eating X,Y,Z or whatever, and then they report good results. Maybe sometimes our bodies just need to be surprised, I don't know.

Just wanted to pop in to say I ate 1500-1700 this week instead of 1200-1500, and I took a rest day, and I lost 1.6lbs. :) So maybe you guys were right and it was a calorie issue, only time will tell! I am just relieved to see something. This is the first time my weight has gone down since probably February.

I appreciate your replies so much! Sorry for the longwinded response, I am trying to reply to everybody...
I will find my thyroid results and post them. I just had the test done maybe a month ago, and the doctor is waiting for me to get a thyroid ultrasound and come back in June before I know whether or not he even has any other theories... I have pretty much all the hallmark symptoms of hypothyroidism, and it would explain most of the medical ailments I've had, and it runs rampant in my family.. but so far it looks like I don't have it. It's really a mystery. So far the only thing we have determined is that I am always low in B12 no matter how much of it I get.
These are all good thoughts. My diet does still need improving, I have been working more servings of fruit and veggies in.. . Right now I am probably at 2-3 servings a day, which I know isn't enough, but I just can't seem to work more than that in without filling up on things and then I come in under on my calories. That, and my stomach is set off by too much fibrous food. I was eating salads every day for lunch and had to stop because they hurt my stomach and I was too full to eat anything with actual calories in it. I have to keep working on ways to sneak them in here and there each day!
It's just weird, a year ago I did 45 minutes or so of cardio 4 or 5 times a week, didn't change my diet at all, and I lost 20lbs in two months. Now that I try to do things the "right" way it doesn't work! I am going to try upping my calories to 1500 and maybe a bit over and see if that helps. I'm also thinking about reducing my weightlifting to just a couple times a week, and stick with my full cardio and pilates routine. Maybe then I will have more energy to bring to the cardio, and I wouldn't mind if my muscle growth slowed down a bit... I'm starting to look like a fat ninja turtle.
1) did they do a full thyroid test? what was the level? Sometimes when we have enough T4 we don't have enough T3. Sometimes we have enough of both, but not enough FREE T4 or T3. Some doctors think anything below a TSH of 10 is "good". My doc (and I) feel it should be between 1 and 2.
2) I took almost a year to lose 25 lbs and then in 3 weeks of being on a medication for asthma I gain 20 lbs. I had a spiral into depression after that but a couple weeks ago I was tested for food allergies (a full panel, not a dincy one a lot of places do) and since cutting out everything I'm allergic to I've lost 18 lbs in a week and 3 days.

The only thing I can offer is what really helped turn it around for me. I routinely ate at the high end of my range (going over at times) but no matter what, I did eat 6-9 + servings of fruit & veggies, and of that, I'd say about 70% of it was fresh raw veggies. I also cut way back on alcohol.
Losing weight is calories in / calories out but it's also about the kind of food we are eating. At least is for me! This was sort of the puzzle piece that fit and made everything else fall into place.
I doubt I would have had my success if I ate 1550 calories of McDonalds / processed stuff (not that you are, of course). The very first week I started doing the veggies thing, the weight started to drop. I don't weight myself, but people started asking if I was losing weight and my clothes were feeling loser.
All I know is this time, w/ the veggies, it was tons easier than past times (I lost 50lbs twice & regained it). Also, the veggies seem to act as insurance for me for those times that I do go over a bit more & make it easier to maintain. Like mentioned, make sure you get healthy fats. I eat 1/2 an avocado several times a week; nut butters, almonds, olive oil, etc. I am not a saint, either: I eat meats & cheeses that aren't low fat; chocolate...I just try to watch my portions.
Other than that, it does sound like for your level of activity, you should be eating more. Something's not adding up...whether it's you need more calories, a change of diet or a different estimation of calories burned. I'm scratching my head here!
How many servings of fresh fruit & veggies are you getting in? What % of your diet is processed food or treats (I try to keep mine at no more than 15% or so).
Don't give up on finding the answer that's right for you. I know it's got to be discouraging but I bet somewhere on this site there is a key to what will work for you. There are lots of great experts here to help you.
You mentioned that you have had your thyroid checked already, but I am curious, did/do you have other symptoms of possible hypothyroidism clinically? Symptoms such as: dry skin, brittle hair/nails, fatigue, constipation, cold intolerance, depression, or edema in your hands/feet? If so, I would think you may want to ask your doctor to check your thyroid function again. There is always a possibility of lab error. Additionally if all this diet and exercise truly are not working, there are other causes for weight gain that your doctor may be wanting to explore if he/she hasn't already.

I am definitely eating 1200-1500. I plan all of my meals and snacks a week in advance and don't deviate unless it's a light day and I feel like I need to bump up to 1500, which happens once in a while.
Whether my cardio is intense enough is a good question. I work out as hard as I possibly can but I am starting from a position of being in horrible shape and I don't monitor my heart rate. That would be something to look into for sure. Maybe I just need more time to get into better shape so I can burn more calories. I do eat enough healthy fats to get into sparkpeoples recommended range most days, but it can be difficult and I don't quite hit it every day.
In the past I've had better results at 4 months in but maybe I am just being impatient. My face does look a bit thinner and my legs are more toned, just no real measurable changes no matter how I measure. My weigh ins are just starting to feel like complete devastation at this point. :( I get my hopes up every time that there will be SOME kind of small change, just SOMETHING, and there is nothing and I feel destroyed. Then I try to build myself up again and tell myself I will work harder, and then still nothing... The mental toughness it takes to wait four months and still not see the scale drop one tenth of a pound is beyond me.
Are you weighing and measuring all your food? Maybe it's time to really evaluate exactly what you are eating, and make sure you really are eating what you think you are eating. Make sure you are logging everything you eat, even little tastes here and there.

Are you cardio workouts intense enough for you to get your heart rate to at least 60-80% of your max heart rate? You say you are eating low fat, are you eating enough healthy fat to meet SparkPeople's recommend range? Remember in order to burn fat, one must have fat in his/her diet.

I am 5'7 and weigh almost 180lbs. I am still trying to lose the original 40-50 lbs, and I am not on any medication. I am sure I don't have 50lbs to lose anymore since I am replacing muscle with fat, but it shouldn't be as though I am on my last 5-10lbs. My appearance and body composition have hardly changed since I started. My clothes still fit the same and I am flabby as ever. My body fat % is consistent and I have not lost inches.
The calorie range sparkpeople.com has given me, even taking into consideration my workouts, is 1200-1500. Maybe that's not correct? I'm not trying to restrict, I've just been eating like I always have. Since I've started trying to eat more like 1500 rather than 1300, it hasn't been that easy to do-- I already eat until I am full whenever I am hungry and adding more just makes me feel too full. I'll keep trying it and see what happens.
I used to eat the same amount but only alternated between weights and cardio each every other day, with one or two extra cardio sessions per week thrown in on weight days just for fun. I only increased my workouts after not getting any results after two months.
I am sure I MUST be doing something wrong, but nothing about this seems logical to me!

What is your current weight and height ? How much are you trying to lose ? Are you still trying to lose that 40-50 pound gain ? If so, 1200-1400 isn't enough calories to sustain a healthy young woman's active day. Eating too little and exercising too much can hinder a person's weight loss. I know this is going to sound strange, but a person has to eat in order to lose weight.
Your body requires a minimum amount of calories just to be able to lie in bed thinking. Those are your BMR calories. Now, when you get out of bed and start being more active, the amount of calories your body needs to function properly increases. Add exercise and that increases the amount further.
You've been eating 1200-1400 per day, just to be able to lie in bed, that might be the minimum you need to lose weight. However, let's add exercise. Let's say you burn 500 calories per day with your exercise routine. Deduct that from 1200 and your body is only netting 700-900 calories a day. that is a starvation diet and definitely not enough calories to keep an adult woman healthy. What happens when a person eats too few calories ? Their body begins to conserve fat to ensure their body has enough calories to fuel their vital organs.
In short, 1200-1400 may be too few calories for you to eat to be healthy.
Of course, since we don't know anything about you other than what you've written in your post, some of your weight issues could still be tied to your medical problems. There are medications that can cause weight gain.
We're just taking educated guesses.

If you are working out twice a day and only eating 1200-1400 calories that could explain your lack of progress. Remember too much of anything, including exercise is not a healthy balance for your body. Your body needs some down time to recover and heal the muscles and replenish the glycogen reserves and prepare for you next workout. Remember too that the body needs calories and nutrients, even more so the more you workout--food is fuel for the body.
And any changes you do, you must allow a solid 4-6 weeks for them to happen (this includes eating more calories) before you determine you are not on the right

My name is Jill, and I am 23 years old. My story is a long one, but I’d appreciate any advice or support I can get.
Five years ago I got sick and we never figured out with what. It started with mono, then started all manner of digestive issues and RAPID weight gain—I gained 40-50lbs within a few months. I saw every doctor I could find and had every test they could think of and nobody could figure out what was wrong with my stomach, and the weight gain was just attributed to starting college—even though that really didn’t make much sense, I was living at home with the same routine as always. Recently it was noted that my thyroid was enlarged, so I saw an endocrinologist and was tested for hypothyroidism—it seemed to explain everything and could have been brought on by the mono, apparently—but my blood tests were all normal.
I have always been a pretty healthy eater, but since January I have been keeping track and only eating 1200-1400 calories per day—a comfortable amount for me, and similar to what I’ve always eaten. My diet is low in fat and sugar and high in protein, and I drink nothing but water-- everything is as it should be. Since January I have also worked out twice a day, every day. I alternate between weightlifting and pilates in the morning, and alternate between elliptical and recumbent bike in the evening. I was doing less, but wasn’t getting results. At this point we are going on 4 months and I have only lost 4lbs, and those 4lbs were lost all at once many weeks ago. I have not seen any progress in over a month.
I just don’t understand. I feel like I am doing everything I am supposed to do and nothing is helping. I tried increasing my calories, thinking maybe my calorie deficit was too large, but I only gained weight back. I know I have built a lot of muscle, but I have scaled back my weightlifting and was never doing anything very intense to begin with… I feel like that should have leveled off enough by now for me to start actually losing weight—it’s been almost four months. And I thought I’d at least be losing inches, and I’m not. Nothing I do seems to make any difference.
I just don’t know how to stay optimistic when I have no idea if what I am doing is working, and working out twice a day is consuming my life. I enjoy it and it makes me feel stronger and more healthy, but I still need to lose a lot of weight and it seems like I am just spinning my wheels and going nowhere. I don’t know what to do anymore.
