Just ask yourself how much YOU like being around a negative UNhappy person? Not to mention, that 'vibe' whether negative or positive affects how others react to you. If someone snaps at me, I find myself snapping back (even if it is under my breath). Same goes for the old saying 'a smile is contagious'.
As far as having fun with your friends and co-workers, I say go for it! But, as with anything . . . 'all things in moderation' and there is a time and place for certain behavior . . . i.e. when cute and fun becomes obnoxious and irresponsible. You'll soon find a happy median.

Update! NO MORE Wiggle room on my weight! Still figuring out how to keep balance and stay in charge. Staying active but could step it up again.

I don't know what your ethnic background is, but there certainly are some cultures where men are discouraged from being silly, expressing too much happiness, smiling too much...I wonder if you might be influenced by some of that in thinking that feeling happy is somehow wrong.
You have to be yourself, but try to have happy thoughts. Every body has bad days & bad thoughts though. When I am in a bad mood, if I try to smile when at work or w/ family or friends, I find that it actually helps me to become in a better mood.
I have a quote on my wall: " We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing & appreciating what we do have. "

I think the important thing is that you talk about being able to be yourself. A happy act doesn't always work, and a person who's just being flippant can end up being a pain. But when you think about it going to visit a depressed person can be a duty rather than a joy, while spending time with a happy person can be a lot of fun. So yes, people do prefer to be around happy people.

I do think people are attracted to others who are more positive and happy. I wouldn't worry about showing that you are happy. It isn't wrong to act happy when you are. I'm not sure that happy has to equal being silly or joking around all the time. Depending on your workplace telling jokes or dancing around often could be perfectly fine but other places it could seem unprofessional. If people at your workplace are responding positively to you then you are probably not going too far in your behavior. I think there is a medium between silly and stoic though and maybe you'll settle there after awhile.

Yes, I think being a generally happy person attracts more people to like us, but there is nothing wrong with being serious or even depressed, unhappy or grumpy at times.
Everyone has many moods and it is unrealistic and certainly not wrong to think we will be happy all the time.

People are drawn to others who project happiness, so don't feel like you have to change. When the situation calls for being serious....be serious. Point being just act as the situation dictates and you'll be fine.

I'm pretty happy with myself lately. I attribute it to becoming healthier and losing a ton of weight so far. I never dressed nicely and was always grumpy before. Lately though I feel fantastic! I'm always smiling, dressing nicely, grooming better and more. At work I now make jokes, literally dance to music on the radio, always smiling and never mad at all. I notice now that I am more "open" to be myself and be silly that the people I work with are much more talkative to me and playful. It's hard to explain fully. At the same time though I still have a small bit of negativity doing these things. I used to put myself down a lot so I never was able to have fun like I do now. Every now and then I get negative thoughts in my head like I look stupid or I need to grow up but in reality, I'm just a very happy person now and I like showing it. Is this wrong? Because at times I feel it is and like I need to stop and be serious.
