Do you have any problems with sugar? Diabetes or hypoglycemia. Sounds like you had a reaction to the sugar. These things are loaded with sugar causing blood sugar to spike and then drop off the headache and nausea sound like a hypoglycemic reaction. Just a though.

I never had a problem with slimfast, but I avoid it now that I realize it's loaded with so much damn sugar. Better than a twinkie or donut, though...

I remember a bunch of ladies at an old job talking about hot slim fast made them sick. Whenever someone brought on in they were like "Oh get ready to spend all day in the bathroom!" So, I've heard anecdotal stories about it making people sick. It could have been a coincidence that you got sick after using these products. They're not really great for you anyway, so you won't be missing out if you stay away from them. Hope you feel better.

A serving of Slim Fast has 250 calories! Even the 4 hour protien hunger control left me feeling hungry in about a hour. For 250 calories, you can have a egg and 2 slices of whole grain toast, tea- 2 multi grain Eggo's with a dollop of sugar free jelly or yogurt, tea or coffee- a serving of hot/cold cereal with fruit, many other choices for 250 calories! My doctor told me to much zinc or iron can cause upset stomach, constipation especially if a daily vitamin/mineral supplement is taken with a vitamin/mineral fortified "shake", or diahrea/gas from to much fiber in my diet. Personally, I don't like the taste of the shakes or bars. The kind made with soymilk did upset my stomach.

ETERNALMIDNIGHT, I'd be interested to know where you got that info. Some of it sounds a little bit extreme and I'm wondering how they came about the statements. My future career as a dietitian in the Army will have me dealing with lost of protein shake junkies and I'd like to have as much information as possible, could you send me a link?

I am not familiar with Muscle Milk, but I am with Slim Fast. In the past, I got very sick on two occasions after drinking Slim Fast, but that was because I was taking Women's One a Day pills and too much Zinc did me in. If you did not get sick until later then it could have been the Muscle Milk or drinking both types of drinks in one day because they may have had too much of something in it for your body to handle.

I tried looking online for side effects for both products.

Slim Fast: Transient side effects include constipation, headache, loose stools, intense hunger, gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort. These side effects typically disappear with continued use of the shakes, but may persist in some people. Dieters who are lactose intolerant may experience significant bloating and gas while using milk-based Slim Fast shakes.

Side Effects of Muscle Milk
Some people might experience diarrhea, abdominal cramps and nausea after the consumption of muscle milk. It is known to affect the reproductive organs. It is difficult to digest muscle milk, as the milk is known to cause oxidative damage. A person consuming muscle milk is at a high risk of suffering from cardiac diseases. This is because of the excess amount of glycocyamine present in the milk. In some cases, it is known to cause neural misfiring. A sudden increase in the weight is observed after drinking muscle milk. Muscle milk in its powdered form is known as cytosport. Cytosport muscle milk side effects are almost the same as cited above. This cytosport milk contains sweeteners and artificial flavors which can be harmful to the body. Since muscle milk increases the amount of proteins, calories, amino acids and other nutrients in the body, a person might suffer from side effects of the excess nutrients as well. Also the fat content present in muscle milk is high and it has the capability of suppressing hunger. Thus, you will not get the natural nutrients present in food.

I agree with previous posters. Real food is better. I can't say as I've ever had Slimfast, so I don't know if that's what made you sick. I do eat an occasional Kashi protein bar (when I'm running errands and don't want to stop for fast food... or when I'm working late and the client brings in pizza) and I've never had a bad reaction to them.

Why not try to find a quick go-to breakfast you can stomach? Through trial and error, you should be able to find something. Try a high fiber bread and 1-2 T of peanut butter with some fruit. This is a quick breakfast and will keep you fill for awhile.

Also - like someone earlier mentioned, try to carry health snacks with you - nuts, string cheese, apples, grapes, etc.

And add my emoticon to you.

urgh I`d say NO that is not a common reaction.

Do you have any allergies?

Can you post a complete list of the ingrediants? Is there anything in there you know your sensitive to (sweeteners, flavouings etc)

I would not drink or eat them again if the cause of your reaction is unknown.

But anyway if this really is a change to your lifestyle, why are you drinking slim fast? IMHO they are not part of a healthy lifestyle change you can keep up for the long term. Follow the spark stages recomendations, building in healthy habits into your life gruadually, like drinking water, eating more fruits and vegetables etc.

The Slimfast drinks make me fat. I only can drink the powder form. I just leave it only and drink homemade smoothie.

You should make you smoothies that will help you.

Look on SP site and look up smoothies to give you some ideas and recipe.

Keep up the good work.

By the way Welcome to SP.

Let's get this weight off. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I prefer real food, personally. It's much more satisfying. I once got a really bad headache after eating a protein bar (whatever my dad had in the cupboard), and I can't say I've had one since. I used to drink Slimfast or Muscle Milk Lite drinks only when I was in a real hurry. I was never satisfied but it sustained me for a couple hours until I got real food. I've never eating more than one meal replacement a day, or likely more than 3 in any given week, so I can't tell you if that's the problem, but I suspect real food wouldn't make you sick. Keep a PB&J or turkey sandwich on hand, as well as healthy snacks like carrots and hummus, almonds, fresh fruit, etc.

I have a hard time eating breakfast and eating right. I usually skip breakfast and lunch and pigout during dinner and eat poorly (snacking) thru out the day, and am rather a couch potato and live a sedentary which is why I'm overweight and why I've joined SP to CHANGE my lifestyle. I thought I'd try something new and today I purchased some slimfast (321 strawberry N cream shake) and muscle milk bars. I drank the slimfast drink early this afternoon and it was pretty good. a couple of hours later I ate a muscle milk bar. Wow, I have NEVER been so sick, even with morning sickness. I got a fierce headache and threw up so much it was terrible! I took a nap and had some "real" food (Basil Thai Rice) and I feel much better now. Just feeling a tiny bit woozy--but much better.

Does Slimfast Shakes or Musclemilk bars make you feel sick to your stomach or give you a headache? Just wondering. I'm very leary to try more slimfast or muscle milk bars now.
