Staying on my mini-elliptical for 10 minutes ..slow going but made my self increase the time to 20 minutes at a time by end of my second week. It was hard! emoticon

My first step was just getting myself to move more. I hated to exercise. I started by parking in out lying areas and walking in to the office or mall. I started taking short nature walks with friends. None of this felt like exercise.

I added accountability with Sparks and I used their resources. I'd do a short fitness video every day. I counted gardening. I built up slowly over time. At some point, exercise became routine instead of a chore. Now I walk for an hour every day (about 3.5 miles) and I do yoga or Pilates for 45 minutes. I still do a short strength training video daily too.

I feel great and I have lots of energy.

Yes, I remember the shin splints. Then I started track and hill walking and worked my self up to win 3rd. place in a marathon at 45.

I changed my goal from an unreasonable "I want to lose 3 pounds a week" to a much better goal of losing one pound a week. If I lose more that would be great, if I don't its ok too.

I did the same 4 mile hike today that I did my first day on SP 6 years ago. The first time it took almost 3 hours, as I had to stop often to catch my breath on the way up. Six months in, it was more of a walk than a hike, about an hour and 20 minutes. Since then I regained a lot of the weight, and started over yet again.. Today it felt pretty easy, and took about an hour and a half. We lingered at the top and enjoyed the view, chatted, and stopped to photograph wildflowers. The endorphins from the exercise and the peace and tranquility of being outside in nature are so worth the effort! Just getting out the door is the biggest step! Walking outside is much more satisfying than going to the gym, although the elliptical and treadmill are a good substitute when schedule or the weather interfere. Once you start moving, you'll be addicted!

My baby steps include: 1) quitting Weight Watchers, 2) Starting SparkPeople!!, and 3) ordering and receiving The Spark Solution. NOW...I just need to crack open the book, read, and follow the directions!! LOL

Although my baby steps didn't involve walking, it did involve a complete lifestyle change. Five years ago was when I made the decision to change my life. At 30 years old I was completely out of shape and over 100lbs overweight and I knew that if I didn't change my life I would end up with major health issues.

I had to start small (baby steps). I started by going to the gym 3 times a week for 30 minutes. I remember the first day I went. I was intimidated by all the fit looking people and felt like I didn't belong. I did the lowest level on the elipitical and thought I was going to die. For months that was the only machine I touched because it was in the back row and nobody could see me. As I was losing weight I started walking on the treadmill and gaining more confidence.

In the meantime I worked really hard to clean up my diet and hired a personal trainer to help me with strength training. Eight months after first stepping foot into that gym I started running and signed up for my first 5K. After completing that 5K I was hooked on running.

Now five years later I am within my goal/ideal weight (still would like to lose a few more pounds to get faster), am training for my 10th marathon, have completed several triathlons, and will begin training for a half ironman this winter.

Yea, I remember those baby steps like they were yesterday and I think back as to what I've accomplished since that first 30 minute workout on the eliptical, especially when I don't want to get up for my 5:30am spin class or my 18 mile training run.

I don't think I ever took the time to do the baby steps and I believe that's why I have not been really successful.

I'm a fan and collector of exercise DVDs and I believe I finally found the right ones to begin with the baby steps. From Amazon I ordered a set of (4) Leslie Sansone Older adult walk DVDs and the very first one I opened felt like it was made especially for me. It's instructional and taking it slow to build up to the walking, strength and balance. I'm excited to begin using these.

I too started with baby steps, and now its sometimes 12,000!. I wear my pedometer from the min. I get up. I walk at my 2 15min. break times at work, If I don't get enough steps in by end of dinner time, I walk extra blocks. It's a mental thing for me, I must see those big numbers!!! Keep it up!!:]

freefromfood this is a good idea . I also walk around my home . I just can not walk outside . the uneven ground is not good for my feet . so the house makes it level and I go up and down the celler stairs many times a day during my walk . I think I will use your idea of the magnets . I just walk and do not count the laps .

I started by just walking around my house. I measured a track from my fridge through the kitchen, through the dining area to the hallway and back to the kitchen fridge. It is 10 metres. Every time I passed the fridge on my lap i would stick a fridge magnet on the fridge. After 10 laps I had walked 100 metres. Every so often during the day I would do these 10 loops and add up the magnets on the fridge to see how far I had walked by the end of that day. If I did 10 laps 10 times a day it was a kilometre walked - 1000metres. I couldn't face exercising outside where anyone would see me, and I also knew that I couldn't make excuses about the weather being too hot/cold for exercise if I did it at home. Then I started timing my 1 kilometre walk to find out what speed I was walking. 1 kilometre in 15 minutes meant I was walking at 4 km an hour. Then I would try and beat that speed, or add more distance. Now I do the same km walk at home at 5 km/hr twice a day as a warm up and a cool down to my hour long daily home gym routine that a sports specialist set up for me.

And marking the laps with magnets on my fridge was a good reminder every time I opened the fridge to eat mindlessly...instead of eating i would do another 10 laps and get the reward of seeing another magnet on the fridge!

What fits your schedule better...exercising 1 hour a day or being dead 24hrs a day? lol

I am back after 3 years of school and putting everything in front of my health. Now it's time to take those baby steps toward a healthier and happier me.

Great job! Keep on moving. It get's easier if you stick with it. Great question too!

I also had a desk job and enjoyed the couch the rest of the time. My most difficult, and rewarding, is "just 10 minutes." I thought I would die for sure before those 10 minutes were up, but I eventually began adding a few more minutes. Some others were learning portion control, trying to get 5 svg of freggies, getting off of sugar/junk food, tracking, etc.

On this long journey, I've re-visited baby steps during struggles, as needed, and they became fewer and further in between. Eventually, it all comes naturally!

You are doing great. Keep it up!!

It seems like ages ago...

The first day I went to the gym in my efforts to be healthier I got on the elliptical and made it a whopping 5 minutes before I had to stop because I was out of breath, my lungs were burning and my heart pounding.

Today I am able to do 50 minute spin classes and tomorrow I am hiking my first 14er.

I am really glad I took that first baby step and, struggles included, glad I stuck with it to be where I am now.

Inspirational! :-) I am definitely in the same category you were you when started.

I have just restarted Spark People after last doing it in 2007. And it works so well. I was a size 24 and got down to a size 18 (Australian) to have my baby. Now she is 3 and I am a size 24 again, so I am back, ready to get healthy again.

Another way to enjoy your walk more is to listen to podcasts. I love NPR's "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me." It's so funny I don't notice the pain. You could also get audio books and then you will want to walk so you can find out what happens next.

I remember my baby steps changing from the low-carb American Diabetic Diet to a high-carb vegan diet! LOL I thought I was gonna die not eating meat and switching to all those carbs! I was so deceived. I cut down to one serving of lean meat a day... Then one serving every other day, then twice a week, then once a week. To now I don't even like the taste or smell of meat! I eat the foods I love... pasta, baked potatoes, rice, fruits, chili's all high carb and I no longer have diabetes! My average blood sugar is 90 instead of 200. And I have lost over 60 pounds! I am staying on a vegan eating plan for life! It's the best. I feel 20 years younger and have more energy than I ever have and the weight is coming off. I'm seldom hungry and eat as much as I want! I'm happy! Take those baby steps if you need them. Baby steps is better than no steps!

I can't imagine not enjoying walking. I could not move much for a couple of years due to serious illness, and I appreciate every step that I am able to take.

Have you tried listening to music while you walk? I find that very motivating.

I ,like many of us over fifties, am no novice at dieting. But I certainly am learning that in some areas of fitness and nutrition, I am clueless. So I guess that I am still taking baby steps. But I am learning something new everyday.

Actually...I started with a big leap in changes and I've been making small baby steps every time I see things need fine tuning because of a plateau slump.
I started by dropping the stuff made with sugar and tried for low fat.
Then I realized that even staying within my calorie range, the number of carbs I ate did not work for me. Then I realized starchy carbs was the culprit. I replaced the starch carbs with non-starch carbs and the calorie numbers went way down. I was eating more veggies (and therefore fiber) and therefore a lot less calories. At this point my 'meat' protein averages less than 5 oz and my bean/egg protein is about 6 oz. My BP is great, my cholesterol is good, and I don't have the cravings that I did before.

I'm still at the crawling stage with my exercise...but 30 minutes a day is a huge improvement for me.

Usually! I've gotten a lot better lately about not eating out (which is my biggest problem!) I've been using visualization techniques to help me achieve my goals. I'll be craving french fries and I'll drive past mcdonalds and tell say to myself, "This is me becoming healthier and happier! This is me taking the steps to achieve my goal!"

Visualization has been great for me in many aspects of my life, not just health/fitness. however, you have to do MORE than just imagine yourself thin/fit/whatever! You must actually take the (baby) steps to get there! I remind myself, I won't have the down payment for my home or the body of a fitness model TODAY, but by passing McDonald's and passing the mall and going straight home to work out/study/cook healthy... I am taking a STEP towards becoming the me I want to be. :D

I was very nervous to start Zumba, but with the encouragement of a SParkbuddy, I started with a Zumba Gold session, 45 minutes. I didn,t know if I was coming or going and it took me a VERY long time to get the hang of Zumba Gold, and to be able to work out hard. But then... 45 minutes was not enough for me. I moved on to Zumba toning, then to toning and fitness back to back, for a total of two hours a session.
If you had told me when I was wondering if I could do Zumba Gold that I would be doing a two hour session every week, I would have completely dismissed the idea.
I can do it, and you can do it. Just one step in front of the other.

If hunger isn't the problem, food won't fix it.

The hardest step is the one out the door. After that, I love my walks, listening to good music or an inspirational podcast. Some days I could walk 4 miles and keep going and other days I know after a mile or so that I'm just not into it that day. Every step you take away from the couch is a step in the right long as it isn't in the direction of the fridge.


If you don't love your body now, you won't love it after you reach your goal!!!

I don't count steps but I do track my progress by calculating minutes per mile (I use google maps to calculate my distance and this online pace calculator to calculate minutes per mile
.shtml ).

I got back into a walking routine in mid-July of this year (after doing it sporadically for the past few years). I took a walk around the block, then increased my distance, then worked on increasing my pace. I'm now working on increasing distance again. My beginning pace was about 19-20 mins per mile. I now average 17 minutes a mile. I walk between 1.6 to 2 miles, depending on the day. Last week I surprised myself by walking a 16 minute mile but I really pushed myself to do it. It only took me about 6 weeks to get to that point, which I think is a pretty good accomplishment.

Oh yes... Baby steps every day! sometimes each day is moment to moment. I try to stay more mindful especially around food choices and when I actually eat. Amazing how much just thinking about what I am doing slows me down. I have a friend who challenged me to count my chews at a meal today. I think I will try it. Baby steps, falling down, getting up, more baby steps... kind of how most of us start our journey. emoticon

I remember years ago when I started swimming on my high school swim team and I couldn't do one lap without stopping. Now I swim about 2400m multiple times per week. :)

I feel baby steps is the only way to reach a goal to anything. I started Leslie Sansones 3 mile walk, at 1/2 mile for several weeks, then kept adding and adding. Today I am doing the full 3 miles, and want to do more.
I was a sedentary couch spud, and for people like me, baby steps helped me so much.

a baby step that took me weeks was learning to get through the 6 minute WARMUP{!!!} to 28 day bootcamp! I eventually did the whole bootcamp, tho the last week was actually overexercising for me. I've now reached my original goal weight and am aiming to get rid of another kilo to get back to my revised goal weight, 55. I hit that yesterday but only because emptied and dehydrated by a tummy bug! I aimed to shed 1/2 kilo a week, and consistently shed more, which was encouraging!

MIA-MORSEL- I never recorded steps, just distance. But my first walk when I started Spark I want around the block (less the a half mile). It hurt, I was hot and sweaty, I had to keep stopping because my knees and back were killing me and I had to catch my breath. It took me about a half hour, but I just kept telling myself if I keep it up this is the hardest it'll ever be.
Not only did I end up loving walking, a year later I was jogging, a year after that I was running races, a year after that I ran my first 1/2 marathon!
I actually keep track of my "baby steps" on my sparkpage, then when I'm feeling not great about my progress I can go back and read them to see how far I've come. It's so easy to forget that it was once hard to walk up the steps in my own house or how my shoe ties used to be crooked because it was so uncomfortable to tie them straight on the top of the shoe. Having those accomplishments written on my page is a huge motivation for me to keep adding to them!

I too have learned to love my walks! I started them begrudgingly because I knew I had to do something. I started getting a sort of "runner's high" after my walks, and then I knew I was doing good. I also have the best weight loss results from walking. I have a particular route that I love, but my goal is to hit all parts of our city trail (26 miles) by the end of summer. Not all at once, but in 2 mile intervals.

Did you know about the feature on SP that lets you map your route, and then calculates the calories and miles for you? It's on the fitness tracker page.

I started by walking my dog. Then I added a yoga class once a week. Then I decided to train for a 60 mile walk. I got married, had a couple kids then started running. Eventually I started strength training. It's all baby steps. The journey is what you make it.

I didn't walk much when I first started and I was on the road (sitting in the car) all the time. At first it was walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes or so after work. Then I added walking a loop around the office parking lot at lunch and kept finding new ways to stay moving. After a couple months, I actually started running. I remember the first time I ran for 20 minutes straight -- I was over the moon. I'm still not much of a runner but I can now comfortably run 3 miles. I never, EVER thought I would be able to do that. Keep at it, and you will constantly amaze yourself!!

thank you so much to each and every one of you who posted encouragement. I'm sorry that some of you are in pain as you go about your daily life. I don't think I could summon the courage or willpower to do that. Hope it won't be too long before you are healthy again.

By the way, totally due to the wonderful support at SP, today, Day 9, I walked 4700 steps and then spent 30 minutes gardening; and my old knees didn't even notice!! I'm tired but I'll be fresh again in the morning.

Do I remember them? I'm still in my baby steps. Although it has become a lot easier and I'm growing stronger with each day. When I first started I couldn't even walk an entire block. Now I'm up to a mile. I can only get better from here.

Although I've always been a walker, with a job that keeps me on my feet, I had to take baby steps in lots of other ways when I started out, portion control, weighing, measuring and so on.
You said that you've gone from 500 to 3000 steps per day. That's SIX TIMES what you were doing before, amazing!
I'm pretty much at my goal weight now so I consider myself living proof that this works. Keep it up, it will work for you too if you stick with it.

I'm reliving mine again due to a long lasting injury and making poor choices during that time.

. I had a ped. I wore the first time and like you I walk VERY LITTLE. Was depressing to see how little. The problem is I actually hate to walk and I don't want the running on my knees. I've tried it just don't like it. I found I LOVE the zumba and werq aerobics classes. That's what works for me.

The baby step are exciting I think. I just starting my journey also and I'm on day 8 of getting it all together. When you start seeing those little differences it feels great to know that you're working for them. The energy picks up and I wonder why I put it off so long.

Keep up the good work. 500 to 3000 is really good. Be proud of what you do. Somedays are better than others, but just keep moving.

If you don't love can you expect others to.

With exercise, I fainted the first day I worked out. I lasted 5 minutes.

Then I started doing classes at the gym, and my short term goal was to NOT be the first person in the class to stop for a water break, I went to the gym 2x/week.

With food, my first goal was to not eat 2nds of anything.

Before I started working out, I probably took less than 500 steps a day too. I lived in a 1 bedroom student apartment, and I would sit in my rolling office chair and roll from my desk to the fridge, to grab another full calorie drink to wash down my meal of a bag of Doritos.

I never recorded exact steps, but I've long had a desk job and my favorite hobbies used to involve sitting on the couch and watching movies, knitting, eating. Most of my steps in a day were to and from the kitchen or to and from the car. 500 steps is probably a reasonable estimate.

Now I still have the desk job and I still like movies and knitting, but I walk between 1 and 1.75 miles on my lunch breaks, walk the half mile round trip to the gym, and when friends are meeting within a mile from my house, I'll walk there too (hills and everything!). I absolutely love it now - it feels so good to get fresh air and sunshine, and whether you use it as quiet time or to enjoy conversation it always feels really positive. It's hard to rant about your day on a nice walk, LOL!

Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

I'm on Day 8, the day I increased my steps by 500 to a dizzying 3000 daily steps. emoticon

Has anyone ever started THAT low and gone on to enjoy walking?

it would be interesting to know what other couch potatoes recorded initially. Do tell. emoticon
