yoga - but because have a wonderful teacher. The pilates teacher is good but not wonderful. I also enjoy a mix at my gym called Zen Pilates

I know it is not in the questions, but because I started Taiji when Gramie said why not do something like yoga. (To me Taiji was something like yoga) I prefer Taiji (Tai Chi).

Just one more core focused internal practice.

I guess I prefer yoga. I try to do 10 minutes of yoga at the end of every workout to improve my balance and flexibility. However, I love pilates too! I just don't do it as often so I picked yoga.

I've taken a kundalini yoga class before and it was great. I'm not sure what your objection is to that kind of yoga.

The gym I use has a combined class called Pi-Yo. I really like the combination class because I can get the best parts of both at the same time. Certain teachers are better than others, so it's important for me to pay attention to who the teacher will be. Depending on what I'm doing or how much my back is doing, I change up what I'm doing. Yoga is easier on days when my back is really bad. Pilates on days when I'm feeling better. This way, I'm always able to so something that won't make things worse.

I Prefer Power Yoga it is not like traditional yoga. I discovered Adrienne Reeds Power yoga on a PBS station one day and decided to try it for one month it was half hour daily. That was last March of 2011 I have done her series every day, I went from having a chronic lower back problem since my early teens to a healthy and pain free back. I'm super limber, it has improved my moods, I have strength and stamina that I never had before.
I was on three different blood pressure medications and was able to get off of all of them under my doctors supervision, so this is why I keep up my Yoga practice. I do not think that all Yoga is the same some is very spiritual I'm not into that. I have tried pilates I have not found a good instructor yet but hope to try it again in the near future as I think it is very similar to Power Yoga.

Yoga and Pilates are very similar in what they do. The main difference is yoga is quieter than pilates. The yogi will tell you what to do and stop talking. In pilates, the instructor talks you through the whole movement.

I agree re:hot yoga. I don't even want to be in a sauna or steam room for very long!

My boss would be so happy if he could find a way to put a treadmill inside a sauna or steam room. He likes to leave work about 2 in the afternoon in Jul/Aug when we have triple digit temps and 90+ humidity for a run "before it gets a chance to cool off".

if that is what it takes to be skinny, it won't be happening for me!

What is scary about Kundalini? My pre and post natal yoga classes were in that method. Maybe I just do not know since mine was a specialized class, but there was absolutely nothing in it that would give me pause. It was more repetitive than the vinyasa and was actually a little like pilates in post natal- some of the same moves.

To answer your question, I prefer pilates to vinyasa yoga. I have never tried hot yoga, but that sounds kind of miserable, actually.

and I understand what you mean about the some of the 'spiritulism' (for lack of a better term) being daunting.

I prefer Pilates bcoz it really strengthens your core and back. I think yoga is a bit iffy because the higher levels require eastern style meditation (which contains aspects of Hinduism). Have you heard of the Kundalini thing? scary! I hope I don't offend any Hindus saying this but to each his/her own, I guess.
