On the weekends I sometimes plan the whole day or just go meal by meal. I plan the work week out in advance & do as much cooking ahead as I can since weeknights are busy.

I plan for the week. Usually I track daily, but last week I didn't - life was just hectic. But because I had a plan, I was ok with that. But I'm back to tracking today as I don't want to get out of the habit until I've reached goal.
Once a week I sit down and plan the following week's suppers. I write down what we need and what we have on hand. I am flexible though and often buy enough for one extra meal in case we don't feel like what is planned

I'm a planner. I tend to plan a day in advanced, sometimes 2 if I know I've got leftovers. I really don't remember the last thing I grabbed from the fridge and just ate it. I took a week off from tracking but then found myself calculating calories in my head, then writing down meals in a note pad just get an idea of how many calories would be in them, then before I knew it was back to preplanning everything. I guess I'm a little obsessed... but I like to know how my macros are going to balance out, make sure I'm getting enough vitamins, minerals, fiber, my sodium intake isn't going to be too high. Takes a lot of the guess work out of what I'm going to eat/prepare or spur of the moment food choices in the midst of hunger.
But usually once a week I take a day off from tracking... make sensible choices for the most part and loosely keep track of how many calories I'm eating. I am going to have to slowly start letting go of this security blanket though, trust myself a bit more and just learn to eat sensibly. It's a little scary.

I put my meals in the nutrition tracker so that I can look to see what I have and pull it out. If I don't I roam around and sometimes make the wrong choices. If I track by the week it makes it easier for me to stop unplanned eating. If we do go out, I check the menu online and plan ahead. Do you plan your meals ahead of time and do you do it by the day or week? Does it help you to stick with your foods if you do plan ahead? are you tempted to just grab foods from the fridge if you don't plan ahead?
