Thanks, ArchimedesII and Cheetara79! I really value your input. It means alot to me knowing that I can come here and post whatever and have someone care enough to respond. I am not going to give up no matter what, but will have to concentrate on the solution to my problem. With your input I can do just that!

Focus on your health rather than the scale. In other words, celebrate all the healthy things you're doing for yourself rather than worrying about what the scale says. Every time you eat a healthy meal or do a workout, congratulate yourself and maybe even give yourself a non-food reward. All of your healthy choices will add up to weight loss but it's best to focus on the health rather than the fickle scale.
Also, find other ways to measure success rather than relying on the scale. For example, go out and time yourself walking a mile as fast as possible. That will be your baseline. As you do more exercise and get more fit, try that test again in a month perhaps. You will see real results!

While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. There will even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Could you be retaining water ? Definitely. There are lots of different causes for water retention. Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to "gain" weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days. If you noticed the scale go up recently and you know you haven't been overeating, then you know you haven't gained fat.
I can easily gain or lose 3-4 pounds in a day because of a shift in my water weight.
So, what to do ? Find other ways to measure your success that don't involve the scale. Can you walk up stairs without getting winded ? Can you carry more bags of groceries without getting tired ? can you walk a mile faster today than you could a month ago ? Are you sleeping better ? Do you have more energy ? How's your blood pressure ? Do you know that if your blood pressure has dropped since you decided to lose weight, your doctor would be thrilled even if the scale didn't budge. Lowering your blood sugar, cholesterol or blood pressure is a HUGE health benefit !!
that may be the reason your doctor hasn't been too worried about the scale not moving. If your numbers are improving that IS a sign of success. When will the scale move ? I can assure you that if you continue to eat right, watch your portions and get some regular exercise that includes some strength training, you will see change with time.
If you need motivation, I highly recommend that you friend member INDYGIRL. at her highest weight, she weighed over 460+ pounds. two years later, she's lost half that weight. If anyone understands how daunting losing a significant amount can be, she does. Read her blogs for inspiration. She kept plugging along and so should you !
I am getting so frustrated and discouraged. Part of me wants to throw in the towel and the other part of me is determined to get this weight off. Lately the scale has been showing me going up gradually. In small increments, but they are adding up. My mother who is my walking buddy seems to think that I am retaining water, although my doctor didn't seem to concerned when I went in to see him a while back about it. I just don't know what to do and am getting really depressed over seeing the scale continue to go higher each week. Any suggestions?
