Not food related, and an unusual mention I suppose, but along with being conscious of foods rich in vitamin K, when taking warfarin/ coumadin walking barefoot outside might be problematic. The practice is called earthing or grounding. I've seen several warning about earthing and taking warfarin, so thought to mention.

You can certainly have greens, you just need to consume a fairly consistent amount every day. I was on Warfarin for about a year following brain surgery and a DVT and I found it very difficult to do this. I think that planning ahead (perhaps for a week at a time) is key and that using the Spark nutrition tracker will help you a LOT.
I agree with what everybody else has said--talk to your doctor, see a nutritionist and ask tons of questions.
No matter how diligent you are, your INR will vary--that's OK as long as you are keeping up with the checks and adjusting your medication. It will get easier as you get used to it.
You definitely need to discuss this with your nurse / doctor / dietitian!
As others have mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any reason to limit cheese, and they should be open to working with you to match your dose to your diet (not the other way around). Please make sure that you mention to them if you are losing weight and / or increasing your exercise, as these also impact your INR and thus your dosages. They may want to test more frequently when these are happening.
I'm another one on coumadin (warfarin) for life after PE's, and what I found really useful was printing this out:
and taking it in to discuss with the clinic that monitors my INR. I personally prefer to eat at the top end of the "Vitamin K points", with a variety of vegetables each day, so they have matched my dosage to my preferred diet.
It's not too difficult once you get used to it, but please do make sure that you discuss it in detail so that you are not limiting yourself any more than you need to.
I have A-fib, and am on Warfarin daily. I have to limit my greens, and soy ( for me, mayonnaise ).
I eat cheese whenever I want. Not sure why you would need to limit cheese unless it is soy cheese.
I do eat greens and mayo though, just in limited amounts. If you eat 3 salads a week in a certain bowl, then make sure that you eat those 3 salads at the same frequency/size. So if you eat them M,W,F, don't cut down to 2X a week, or go up to 5X a week. If you eat the same amount week to week, the doctor will adjust your Coumadin dose according to your needs. As long as you avoid any big changes in how much Vitamin K you eat, your INR should stay relatively stable.

Thanks everyone, It seems to me that all the information I've received is inconsistent, will definitely look into this further. The cheese thing came from the clinic I attended immediately after my PE and I've had quite a lot of trouble getting my INR stable, still working on this. Thelma

My dad had open heart surgery a few years ago and has been on warfarin since. Like the previous posters say, talk to a dietician. He eats a large salad and a serving of green veggies every day. The key is consistency, not elimination. I am not sure where the cheese restriction comes into play as I have never heard that one and I have a few family members on it (we have a genetic heart valve deformity), so again, see a dietician.

I've worked in a warfarin clinic for over 10 years. We tell our patients they can eat any amount of green vegetables they want... the key is being CONSISTENT (for example a salad or half cup of cooked greens daily or every other day). Research has shown that patients who consume green vegetables regularly actually tend to have more stable INRs on warfarin. The dose can be adjusted to your dietary preferences. Hopefully your providers will work with you on this!

I agree with the previous poster. Ask your doctor for a referral to see a registered dietitian who can create a meal plan specific to your needs.

I would encourage you to meet with a dietician. Perhaps the doctor who's monitoring your Warfarin could recommend someone. It sounds like you have some really special dietary needs to ensure you're not creating an interaction.
(And I am sorry you have to cut back on cheese! It's a favorite. )

Hi, I am now on Warfarin for the rest of my life after having blood clots and pneumonia on my lungs , which means leafy green veggies, cheese, and various other foods are cut to a minimum. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks Thelma
