I usually have 1 diet pop (yeah...i'm one of those pop people) per day - at lunch - and then only if I've drank at least a 1/2 days worth of my required water intake for the day (to make sure I'm not using it to replace the water that I should be drinking.) I will also often drink it when we go out with friends - if everyone else is drinking alcohol and I'm forgoing I figure I can at least treat myself to a pop:)!
All that said - though I don't believe that drinking diet soda is harmful - at least not in reasonable quantities - it's definitely not a health food. I think it's okay to drink - especially if you're in the process of transitioning off high calorie regular soda - but it doesn't mean you don't need to still get all your healthy beverages (aka lots of water!) into your diet.

Aspartame can give you headaches because, in some people, it causes brain swelling. I ended up in the hospital several times before my doctor's figured out the aspartame connection.
Diet pop with Splenda or Stevia? I think those are fine as an occasional treat. For everyday drinking though, I would argue that water and herbal tea/green tea are much better.
I've lost 210 pounds drinking anywhere from 2-5 a day. I also drink Crystal Light, Coffee, Tea. Rarely plain water. I usually don't care for it. I guess everyone is an individual, but I do low carb and have lots of diet drinks and now weigh 115. :)

I'm a big believer in moderation! If you want an occasional soda, have one. If you are drinking a 12 pack a day you have issues! If a soda a day keeps your sugar cravings under control, have one. If diet soda makes you feel hungrier don't drink them.
There are studies that support just about every idea any one has ever had. Our "experts" really have no idea about what we should or should not eat or drink. This week coffee is good, next week it's bad. Saccharin causes cancer, no it doesn't! Wheat makes you fat, eat more whole grain! We need to use our common sense, pay attention to how we feel, try to figure out which studies pass the common sense and peer review tests and do the best we can.

diet sodas - I definately dont recommend them. Im Not much of a soda drinker, regular or diet. On a rare occasion I may drink a ginger ale but for the most part i drink watered down vitamin water or just plain water or home made veg juice.

I only drink the DIET RITE because it contains no sodium and no Aspertame ....Crsytal Light has Aspertame and it make my ears ring a lot more .

Frankly, I'm more concerned with the studies that say drinking diet soda regularly can lead to heart attack and stroke. Flaws in the study or not, that scared me enough to stop drinking it cold turkey.

I almost always get my water in also, but I am a Diet Coke drinker, and have been for a long time. I've read all the scares about artificial sweeteners. I'm slowly, over time, cutting down the amount I drink.
There are worse things that I could be drinking, so I try to not be too terribly hard on myself as I eat really well, exercise regularly and get my water in.

I have less that 10 carbonated drinks a year, they are really bad, even in the diet form.

Diet Coke has saved me NUMEROUS times from binging... I limit it to only one can every day or every couple of days (only when I have a huge sweet tooth, or it is between meals and I am bored and munchy)... I am no advocate for drinking the stuff, I know it is not healthy, however... it has assisted me through some tough times when my mind wants to eat but I know my body doesn't need to eat. Once I am at a healthy weight, I will work on eliminating diet coke, but for now, It is an awesome weight loss tool in my arsenal. I don't believe it makes me hungrier, as it does to some other people.

the diet drinks can trigger cravings for me. i thought it was just my imagination. i thought i was the only one. i told a few of my friends that, and they looked at me like i was crazy.
i still will choose and occasional diet over regular if i am out. mainly because i don' t want to spend the calories on a few regular pops. (soda to the rest of the country-but i am from the midwest : ))

There has been volumes of research on artificial sweetners....the American Cancer Socirty conducted a study in the 1980's and found those that used artificial sweetners gained more weight than those who did not use them....seeems the amino acids in asparamine stimulate the release of leptin and insulin which are the primary hormones that regulate metabolism.
The Federal Drug Admin. still says its safe...but some reseach concludes leukemia,IBS, Fibromyalgia and other serious health problems are associated with artificial sweetners. Some say it also produces changes in blood glucose ...and I can attest to that!
well maybe if you elimate all artificial sweeteners for a couple of weeks which is not a long time...you can see if you feel differently as people do not realize how these sweetners can affect them.
...you may notice you have less cravings and more weight loss too!
A can of Coke is about 150 calories. If you drink four of them over the course of the day, that's 600 calories. Would it be better to drink four Diet Cokes? Yes!
There are no hidden calories in diet sodas, they cannot make you fat.
However, it is true that aspartame makes some people hungry and gives them mild headaches. It happens to me. If I drink 2 diet sodas after work while I'm making supper, a half hour later I want to eat everything in sight.
If you're trying to break an addiction to soda, I would say at least a few should be switched to diet sodas, because regular soda is so highly caloric with no nutritional benefit. If you can learn to like drinking plain water or tea or low-fat milk instead, even better.

Diet soda isn't going to be completely detrimental, but I also think it's good to mention that just because it's "diet" doesn't mean it's healthy necessarily. I personally still think it would be best to primarily stick healthier beverages for the majority of your liquid intake (water, low-fat milk, unsweetened tea), and limit the amount of diet soda that you drink (maybe a can a day). I just think if the goal is really about a healthier lifestyle and not just weight loss then drinking large quantities of diet soda probably isn't the best option, but that's just my two cents.

I used to drink 4 cans of diet soda a day as a teenager. I slowly decreased the amount over the years. Recently, my doctor advised me of the side effects of aspartame (severe headaches, dizziness, memory loss, etc) that is added to most diet sodas. Now I look for sodas that do not have aspartame in them and I drink more flavored water.

GZELLEFRO: They do have some sodium, but hardly what I'd call an "awful lot". A 12 ounce can has about 40 mg of sodium in them. Definitely want to TRACK it, but it's nto going to break the bank if you're already eating low-sodium.
Some research has suggested a link between diet soda consumption, but "drinking too many of them" isn't it. There's nothing in there to make you gain weight. ;) Some theorize that the artificial flavors trigger cravings, which leads to overindulgence in other respects. Some also believe (and I tend this way) that people who drink diet soda think that because they're drinking diet soda, they either don't have to count calories, or otherwise overindulge because they think they're eating less than they are.
Since I switched from regular soda to Coke Zero, I am steadily losing weight. that's because I replaced about 400-500 calories a day with zero-calorie drinks! I mostly drink water and tea now, but do have the occasiona Coke Zero when I want something carbonated.
I know and understand that many say it's a huge no-no, but I've never had problems consuming diet soda every once in a while. I know about the artificial sweetener debate, and I do believe that they can do damage to the body. I just am not at a point where I will say I won't ever drink it. I love Diet Coke, it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I am not ashamed to say I drink it a couple of times a week and I most likely won't ever stop, either. It's the only type of soda I do drink. Even before changing my lifestyle, I never drank regular soda. It doesn't appeal to me (the taste). It's only diet for me.
So, anyone can argue this way or that way, but I will be keeping my little guilty pleasure

I've read that diet soda can actually cause people to be fat because they drink too many of them. They have an awful lot of sodium in them too. Another thing to consider is that some people can get migraines from the artificial sweetener (aspartame) in them.
I don't like the flavor of diet soda, so if I want a soda, I drink a 12 oz cup of soda, as long as it doesn't put me over for the day.
I guess it's a personal preference.

I am a hard core diet soda drinker. I don't have any health problems that can be traced to diet soda consumption, and unlike some I do not find it makes it harder for me to lose weight. I would recommend if you do decide to drink it to transition over and then try your best to cut down the consumption. Take it from someone who drinks too much - it might not have been proven to be bad, but I'm not calling it good.

I just heard that diet soda is not healthy to drink and can cause some serious health problems. However, I am a girl who constantly craves soda and now that I'm trying to lose weight, I'd like to make the switch. Do any of you diet drinkers experience any problems?
