I totally agree! I watched a documentary called "Fathead" about 2 months ago and it really makes you think! More and more studies are showing low carb for diabetics is safe. Even the ADA "ok-ed" it in 2008! I do not eat low carb as such but my carbs come from vegetables and fruits for the most part. Our bodies are very complex and no one knows every detail of how we work yet.
I will have to read Dr. Berstein's diet book. I was diagnosed in 2002 with diabetes. That day , mine was 526 at a health fair. At my next doctor visit, I was sent to a diabetes education class, where I was told that cutting carbs would lower your blood sugars. I asked about Atkins, but was told, cutting carbs too low is dangerous! I was put on a 150 gram a day diabetic diet. When I could follow it, I averaged about 180 with my blood sugars. About once a week, I would no longer be able to stick to such a restrictive diet, and would binge, resulting in blood sugars over 500 . I was on Amaryl, and 2000 mg of Metformin daily at this point.
In 2009 I finally read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, and started following it. Within a year I was off ALL diabetic meds, and haven't taken one in 30 months, and have a 5.1 A1C. I still stick to less than 40 g or less, of carbs, daily. Now my biggest concern is getting some carbs in each of my meals, to avoid LOW blood sugars. Is it restrictive to cut out fruit, potatoes cereal, bread, corn, beets, peas, and carrots? Yeah, but there are a lot of low glycemic foods we didn't eat before, and it turns into a shift of what foods I eat, not a reduction. Plus, I am never hungry, so that helped me lose 135 lbs, which had a bunch of other health benefits. Anyone on a diabetic diet also knows that that diet is also restrictive.
I think you should go ask for help first, but if you are following a diabetic diet, and nothing is getting better, and you are just surviving by popping pills, you might want to consider low carb. I don't believe in living with a disease. You are either getting better or worse. While you are hovering at 180 blood sugars, you are doing damage to your eyes, feet, teeth and kidneys etc. All you are managing at that point is to wait to die, go blind, become an amputee,lose your teeth, or be on kidney dialysis. All pills have side effect too.
I have never heard of anyone getting off meds, and becoming a latent diabetic, by eating a " diabetic diet ". If you think the diabetic diet will work for you, SP has as good of one as any other. I am not suggesting you not see an expert. I think every single person should see one. Diet is of huge importance to us all, but we act like it is simple. Can you imagine if we treated cancer like this? I just think that people in this position( dietitians ) are not permitted the freedom to state anything other than what is currently accepted. The risk of being sued outweighs their concern for healing people. Who can blame them? These people aren't actually doing research, just reading books, and repeating the studies they are given. Since 99% of their patients will only be on an approved meal plan, the results will all be the same. The dietitians have no evidence to show that what they are prescribing is not the correct way to eat. Faced with no idea if low carb would help more, and if they say to eat that way they could be sued and lose their license, they just fall in line. They have bills to pay, and with no proof, would you risk your career ?
I also acknowledge that I use a much stricter form of low carb than many others suggest. Personally, I gain weight, and get cravings if I eat anything over 40 grams of carbs a day, or anything sugary, besides cheese ( lactose ). I would recommend if you do this, to aim for the highest carb allotment you can eat, and see a normalization of blood sugars, and a steady decrease in weight on. If you can do this at 100 grams a day, why drop to 20 grams. Atkins only had Induction to show how easy it was to lose weight, and also to show that hunger disappears, and you feel a lot better. Basically 2 weeks to prove it worked, and build up your excitement.
Of all the diabetic people I know, the ones who have improved the most have done low carb, and the lower they go the better. Maybe this is just a coincidence, but when I asked how a reduction of 50% of my carbs ( from 300 to 150 ) was beneficial, but a drop of another 67% ( to 50 ) was dangerous.. the experts answer was.. " It just is ".

Instead we should be doing research at different levels of carbs, and seeing how it affects diabetics. Answering all the questions that are thrown around as if they are fact, even though they are just hypotheses. If they put 1000 diabetics on 50 grams a day or less, made sure they got supplements to stay healthy, and got 80% of them off all meds, while suffering no ill health effects, what would happen then? That is why they never do a study like that. Too much money would be lost. They make money, while you manage a disease.

I recall reading this testimonial recently about a person being successful at controlling her blood sugar levels with diet. Thought to share.
I have found Dr. Bernstein's diet to be too low carb for me however I know some diabetics who love it. I also do not agree with the "everything in moderation" or the standard pyramid/plate either (too much carbs for me!) Every diabetic is different then another and you really just have to find out what works best for your body.

SUMMERSHORTS--Thanks for the info! I have been on Metformin since 2006 and have not experienced any problems at all but if I do I now have something to look into. Never had a problem with diarrhea from it either and praying I never do.
My husband has been taking Metformin for years. He went to the doctor complaining about tingling in his hands and feet and was sent to have a course of B12 injections - no explanation why, we only discovered the link between Metformin and B12 deficiency by looking on the internet. My mother-in-law also takes it and is severely depressed at the moment, another symptom of B12 deficiency. I'm not saying everyone who is depressed is suffering from a B12 deficiency but it is one of the symptoms. There are also some informative clips on YouTube if you do a search for Vitamin B12 deficiency. People on this medication should apparently have their B12 levels checked annually.
Hi Judy, I have been diabetic for years and the best information about your diet will come from a dietician. What works for some might not work for others, so you and your dietician can work together on this. A word of caution on the Metformin - I was put on it and had terrible diarrhea. Couldn't figure it out until I stopped the med, then it cleared up, so if you start to have loose stools, etc. maybe check that out. I dropped my A1C from 9.6 to 6.5 in less than 6 months just by exercising (walking, biking) and watching what I eat. My weight didnt' drop, but my bloodwork numbers did, and I'm very happy with that.
My DH is diabetic. Most insurance plans will cover at least one visit to a Registered Dietician for people with conditions, where what you eat affects your condition--ie, diabetes.
When my DH went to the RD, I went with him. It was highly informative, well worth the time. In the town where I live (and it's a pretty small town) there is a Diabetes Center affiliated with the local hospital and the RD he saw was there. She talked about all the basics and serving sizes etc, had plastic food showing what a serving was etc etc etc. Gave him a bunch of handouts-- I especially like the one with food choices listed in columns, sort of a "Good-- Better-- Best" sort of thing. Makes it a little easier to make some choices, when I'm deciding what to serve at dinner.
So I'd really recommend that you ask for a referral to a RD.
We do offer meal plans for this condition, but I'd also ask your doctor for a referral to see a registered dietitian. That person can create a meal plan specific to your needs.

I would try to stick to the following:
wild animal protein (fish, chicken, turkey, beef, etc) raw greens cooked cruciferous veggies (never raw) other nonstarchy veggies plain greek yogurt olive oil fish oil whole fat cheese (CLA source) eggs butter occasional processed meats (pepperoni, all beef hotdogs, etc) lower sugar content fruits (tomato, cucumber, zucchini, etc) brewed tea (decaf) vitamin c supplement
I hope you are monitoring your BG and have parameters of when to hold the Metformin.

Hi Judy - you are best to not rely on members comments re this type of health issue. You are best to ask your Dr for a referral to a Dietitian so that YOUR health/blood results etc. are dealt with appropriately.

Hi my name is Judy, I just found out a few days ago I am diabetic. Doctor prescribed Metformin HCL 500mg for me to take. One 15 minutes before I eat breakfast and one 15 inutes before I eat Dinner. I have been doing some research for diabetes, but am so confused as to wat can drink and what I can eat..Anyone have any advice or know of a website that might clariy this for me? Thanks in advance for all help....Judy
