Faith, did you try both radial (wrist) and carotid (side of your neck)?

Make sure that you are not using your thumb to take your pulse and that can confuse things.

Well, I keep trying to find out what my resting heart beat is but I can't even find a pulse. Worrying really!!

Losing weight could help lower your blood pressure. but will it help lower your resting heart rate ? As others have noted, that's a function of genetics as well as your exercise routine. Some people do have naturally high heart rates and you could be one of them. And that doesn't mean that you're an unhealthy person. It's just the way your body is.

One thing I encourage everyone to do before they start exercising is to get a full physical. Find out what your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol all are. You need starting points. As you lose weight with a healthy diet and exercise, those numbers will improve. the journey to good health should always include regular appointments with your doctor.

If you have been sedentary for a very long time, you need to slowly ease into a regular routine so that your exercise will eventually become that, a routine. Don't try to do too much too soon or you increase your risk for injury, fatigue and burn out. Start with a daily walk. Walking is a great way to increase and improve your body's cardiovascular endurance. I walk every single day.

There are lots of different things you could do for exercise, but start slowly. Your heart will get stronger with time and regular practice. Be patient with yourself and your body. AND if you have any concerns, talk to your doctor. Your doctor is there to help.

Your resting heartrate is a function of cardiovascular fitness - how efficiently your heart can move blood with one pump. So as your cardio fitness improves (by moving more: running, walking, swimming, or w/e) your heartrate will go down over time.

Mine has always been relatively low, about 54 now. It depends a lot on your body and genetics. Some people, my wife included, have a higher RHR and when doing aerobics, get to a much higher heart rate more quickly. I have trouble getting my HR above 120 for any length of time. Just depends on the person.

No one needed to scare me. I tend to be a worrier, so I had seen an article about the importance of resting heart rate, and found that mine was on the higher side of normal. I certainly won't be afraid to jump on my treadmill. I know that, eventually, all of my hard work is going to pay off. I just need to stop freaking out when it's not necessary....

Do you think a lower resting heart rate will cure you of something? Who scared you, just try to get "fit" and feel better, I've never heard of anyone worrying about their resting heart rate, unless they were on strong meds.

Every since I've become more physically active over time. My resting heart rate various between 46 - 52.

Well, fitness can make a difference, but I'm not sure that losing weight alone will.

My resting heart rate is about 50--it is a combination of low blood pressure, genetics and exercising full-out about six days a week.

My resting heart rate is usually around 84 bpm. I need to lose 45 lbs. to get to my goal of 145 lbs. I'm a 5'8" female, and I know better than to be this weight. I have begun an exercise program, but I am freaking out about all I've read about resting heart rates. Does anyone have any idea if losing weight will help in my goal? If so, do you have any other ideas of how to improve my resting heart rate? My ideal would be 70 bpm. Thanks, everyone!!!
