The rivalry between the two countries has been fierce since Women's Hockey started in the Olympics but I must admit that it seems to have gotten worse over the years. In the end, all of those ladies played their hearts out and left it all out on the ice. True spirit of the Olympics is to never give up!
Sadly the internet has a life of its own and things posted that aren't true can take on the semblance of truth by being repeated as fact over and over in multiple venues and in this case the untruth has been going on for a long time and just adds fuel to the fire of a rivalry between teams of different countries.

I agree; I think the OP was merely venting about something she read/heard about the US Women's Hockey Team disrespecting the Canadian flag. Unfortunately, what she read/heard was NOT true. And it was not true years ago, when it was first said.
@EELPIE: Maybe the O.P. just needed to vent via here at SP? I certainly didn't get the feeling that she was blaming any of us here at SP for being disrespectful I think her comment was solely addressing the U.S. Women's Olympic Hockey Team and she's just frustrated at their actions, I know I would be.
That said, GO TEAM U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still confused as to this thread. Was something on sparkepeople said about Canadians?
Or is this just a blanket statement? " I just wish that we all would respect each other while the Olympics are on". This pertains to people around the world?
The olympics is about winning, but it is also about countries and people coming together. While we cannot stop hurtful and potentially harmful things some people say, those who rise above name-calling will rise above the rest. Then there is karma, it is alive and healthy.

Thank you for the link, Kjfitnessdude. I didn't think it was true; I just hadn't found that particular link. I think in the "heat of battle" a lot of things are probably said, just to get people fired up. Unfortunately, I think it's sort of sad as well, that an outright lie is used and then a lot of people believe it, basing their opinions on a complete un-truth.
The only (credible) reference I saw to this-- referred to a claim made in 2002. It was stated by the Canadians and never proven; perhaps it was true but just as well may have been a bit of bluster to fire up the team and the fans, further promoting the rivalry. Looks like perhaps someone has dragged a 12 year old (unproven) claim back out, into 2014. I think we can all agree that the rivalry is fierce. I also think it's wrong to get our knickers in a twist over something that may or may not be true.
I was thrilled to watch the Canadian Women's Curling Team go undefeated and win Gold! That was amazing and historic.
The Women's hockey team - I know there's a long rivalry with USA so it's always a nasty game, and always could go either way. Canada came out on top for the gold - USA will probably win the next game they play.

Is this about what a member of the US Hockey team said? I would bet a lot of bluster and bravado. Although I hope the US Men's team brings it and wins the gold tomorrow.
It is all fun and games until someone loses a tooth and then it's Hockey.

Not trying to be rude but I just wish that we all would respect each other while the Olympics are on....respect each other's country...I know that emotions can run high...but to hear that a certain HOCKEY TEAM walked over my country flag today was disheartening...all I ask...respect each other...we are all human....xoxo
I can honestly say I am a proud Canadian not only for the way we are being represented in all sports but the kindness us Canadians are showing other athletes from different countries...
