I agree with LEKSIPATSY, Maybe start with a class at whole foods. A good cook can usually follow a recipe and a fabulous chef knows that spices are what provides flavor, a tang, etc.

A pinch of this or just need to experiment a little....
these spices are good with beans...cumin, cayenne, chili, parsley, pepper, sage, savory, thyme

with chicken....paprika, rosemary, saffron, sage, savory, tarragon, thyme

with corn try chili powder, curry, dill, marjoram, parsley, savory, thyme

with fish Fish basil, bay, cayenne, celery seed, chives, curry, dill, fennel, garlic, ginger, lemon peel, mustard, oregano, parsley, rosemary

want to sweeten things up try allspice, anise, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg

for soups try basil, bay leaf, chives, cumin, garlic, marjoram, parsley, pepper, rosemary & sage

If you're in the GTA, you'll find that loblaws actually offers some decent cooking classes.

I know here in Alberta, SAIT/NAIT offer some classes as well, but I'm not sure what the equivalent would be there - they're trade schools that offer a culinary program. NAIT actually has week long bootcamps that look interesting, but I should avoid spending a week learning to be a pastry chef :)

I'm not sure what GTA is...
I second the community college idea.
Our Whole Foods also hosts cooking classes pretty regularly. They are an hour and cost $7 each. You might want to check that get to sample to food too.

sometimes even community centres, colleges and even supermarkets have one-of courses (teaching you one particular dish or technique).

Good luck in your search.

Perhaps, if you cannot find one; a search at the library and time in the kitchen with a good technique book may help.

I can't recommend any (live in NZ). As a former cook (Rest Home and Tourist Cafe, not fast-foods) I can tell you that working with food can be very creative. To me it is an art form, but it is also an art that I challenge myself to come up with very healthy, lower calorie, higher fibre alternatives.

If you can't get into a cooking School, perhaps you might like to ask some Restaurant (the style of cooking that you like) if they can teach you some skills in your free time at night, in return for you helping them free. A lot of people get started that way!

Hi Everyone!

One of my biggest struggles with eating is that I don't enjoy cooking. I'm thinking of going to a cooking school with the hopes that they will teach me some new/different meals that I can actually make. I'm not the worst cook in the world (I mean I don't burn water or anything!), I just have never been very adept at it.

Has anyone been to a cooking school in the GTA that they can recommend?
